A Confusing Shoe - by , Sep 13, 2019
2/ 5 Stars
Merrell and I have had great results together and I've used both the Vapor Glove and the Trail Glove with excellent results and fit for running long distances. The Version 5.3 had a nice color combination that I wanted, so I decided to try them out. When they arrived, I was excited to find the color combo was just what I expected, but that is where the excitement ended. The shoe is like a heavy sock glued to a Trail Glove sole. I felt I could possibly adapt to that, but there is no tongue for adjustment. The lacing was hopeless. The laces are thin elastic with a clip to the bottom lace. If you are a fan of not being able to use laces for fitting the shoe, these are for you. I tried and tried to get them to work, but never did get that nice snug fit across my foot. The toe box was roomy enough. Nice and wide, the heel was secure, but the lack of being able to easily adjust the laces was just too much for me, and I could not figure out a way to replace the them with a regular tie sans tongue. Needless to say, these shoes must be for folks who are more brilliant then I or don't know how to tie their shoes. I sent them back and ordered a second pair of the Merrell 5.0 which are the best shoes I've ever owned.

Great for fans of "barefoot" hiking - by , Aug 24, 2019
5/ 5 Stars
I ordered these shoes in anticipation of a hike, and coincidentally met someone on the streets of Seattle wearing the same model and color. I asked how he liked them, and he said that they were not so good for hiking because he could feel every rock on the trail. I mention this because different people will have different opinions of the shoes. Fortunately for me, I decided to try these shoes for hiking to make my own opinion. I walk in the Vapor Glove 4 every day, and I'm familiar with how every crack in the sidewalk can be felt, and sometimes be uncomfortable. However, the Trail Glove 5 3D has a more substantial sole, and I did not find any uncomfortable spots on the trail. In fact, because of the advance review I'd received, I even tried stepping on sharp rocks to see how the shoes performed, and these Trail Gloves provide excellent protection. They're now my main hiking shoe, unless carrying a camping pack. I have narrow feet, and these are marked as Medium. I think they're probably sized correctly, according to how they're described, but they were difficult for me to tighten the laces enough to get a firm fit. Despite that, I did not find them distractingly loose on the trail. I'd love it if Merrell made a Narrow variation of this shoe - it would probably be absolutely perfect for me. Technically, I shouldn't say "larger than expected" - more like "larger than desired!" I've given a 5-star rating because my hiking experience was great, particularly the comfort, despite the fact that there's room for even better fit.

The best - by , Aug 19, 2019

I bought five pairs over time for my husband who had a stroke with weakness on left side dragging that foot when tired. He does well with barefoot type shoe. The oldest pair is over a year old and there is no wear where he drags his foot. These are best. My husband walks on back without putting heel In when he starts walking. He has had them in the pool so he hasn’t treated them well yet they do not show any wear

Very comfortable - by , Aug 17, 2019

Very comfortable shoe. But the speed laces are too long and it's not clear how to shorten them to avoid a long loop of excess lace. No instructions on the website or with an internet search. If the laces are adjustable, then you should have instructions somewhere on your website to explain how to shorten them.

Better than the Trail Glove 4 - by , Jul 28, 2019

I'd purchased the Trail Glove 4 Mesh, and after about 6 months noticed a small hole where my right big toenail hits it. Customer Service told me they'd be happy to replace it, but unfortunately the TG4 was no longer in production or stock and I'd have to select something else. After much deliberation I decided on the Trail Glove 5 3d, even though many reviews indicated it wasn't as good of a shoe as the TG4. I replaced my size 9.5 TG4's with size 9 TG5's and couldn't be happier. They fit great, are super comfortable, and seem to be a much better made shoe than the 4. I only wish they were machine washable like Vibrams FF's.

These do run large, but site warns you. Overall great shoe wearing without socks after long runs. Good for recovery!

This shoe definitely runs a 1/2 size large. With that exception, the shoe is very comfortable. I am a little disappointed in the toe design. It looks more like a sock that a shoe. Overall, I’m satisfied with the shoe.

Bit of a disappointment - by , Jul 01, 2019

I've been wearing Trail Glove 3's for years (and I'm very sorry they are no longer available). I had high hopes for the 5's, but found them to be quite large, although I ordered my usual size. I would have returned them and ordered a half-size smaller, but I personally didn't like the new-fangled lacing system or the higher rise at the heel. I find the additional material to be uncomfortable, pressing into the back of the Achilles tendon when the foot is at full extension at the end of each stride. I went with Trail Glove 4's instead.
