Best mid height hiker I've ever tried - by , Jul 16, 2019
5/ 5 Stars
First a little warning-- despite their appearance, this is not a lightweight shoe! But, if you want ankle support without a thick tongue or rigid ankle structure, you might want to try these. I ordered a size 8, the size I've been wearing in Merrell shoes for years. I was looking for a shoe with more ankle support than low top hikers, not waterproof & no Gore-tex. Since I live & hike in mostly desert & arid areas out west, I don't need waterproofing or extra warmth! I was confused by the Floating Hypercage at first, but now I see that is what makes the ankle support in these so comfortable, along with the very thin integral tongue. The soles are really beefy, but also flexible enough that I can feel the terrain I'm walking on. I have multiple foot issues & so far on my breaking in walks on a sandy trail near my home these have accommodated all of those issues which include: pressure point sensitivity on my ankles & top of my foot related to fibromyalgia; numbness in my toes & ball of foot related to bilateral Morton's surgery a few years back & now made worse by recent chemotherapy; swelling & the feeling like they are on fire related to both conditions. The BOA tightening system is also wonderful as I tend to have to stop repeatedly to tighten/loosen shoes when I am hiking until my feet calm down & settle in. The shoes also easily accommodate my metatarsal insoles. Merrell, you should provide a link so consumers can understand exactly how this system works... I had to Google it to find the BOA website & understand more about the system & what it is constructed of before I made the decision to order the shoe & also to figure out how to use it since no instructions came with the shoes! So far, walking on the mildly undulating sandy & somewhat gravelly trail during an Arizona July, I feel that the boots are performing extremely well, are very comfortable & are meeting the needs of my particular foot issues. My plan is to continue breaking them in bit by bit so that they'll be primed & ready for an upcoming Yellowstone camping trip! A little more FYI: I am 58 years old, 5'5" tall, weigh 138.
