Great Shoe - Not for ninjas... Let me start out by saying, I quite like these shoes. They're sturdy, well built, and these are definitely quality materials. They are also the least stealthy shoes I think I've ever owned. I've been wearing them for a couple of weeks now, but they're still super squeaky and I don't mean soles-on-ground squeaky. The shoes, particularly the left one, are audibly squeaky as I walk around. I'm hoping they'll quiet down as they break in, though. I do wish the tongue was a bit longer and the laces were a bit longer, but really, quite minor in the grand scheme of things. Oh, these are decent skater shoes, if not quite as puffy as the Airwalks I loved so much as a teenager.

A squeak is usually caused by the insole rubbing. A little talcum or baby powder in between the insole and the foot bed usually does the trick. If not, our team can help at 800-288-3124. Thank you.

Merrell's take on a skate shoe? The Berner Shift's are in an amalgamation of a good looking low cut, unassuming sneaker combined with a supportive, thick, insole and, a rugged outsole. Skate shoes are 'in' these days and the Berner's style seems to be cashing in on that with a lot of Merrell's details built in. High praise then for this shoe which doesn't come lightly; I'm incredibly picky. What does this shoe do well? It's a Merrell so by name you assume its an 'outdoors' shoe which, with the simple but effective anti-slip outsole (bonus points for uncomplicated patterns; ie, it's easy to clean off) you won't be caught dancing when you slide on a slippery surface in the typical urban/park sprawl, nor will you fall on your bump on wet tile. I didn't have any 'squeaking' like some other's, even new from the box. Soft, thick leather construction in the high-impact/use areas and thick canvas with cotton laces finish off the 'tough' look while still letting it breath a little. double-stitching all around and a padded collar. In terms of fit, finish and, feel it certainly feels like you're getting a premium product for your $100; I wouldn't actually stretch it into your favorite trail but that's not what this is for anyway. The thick (around 1/4-3/8") insole with plastic arch reinforcement under-neath has more cushioning and support than your pair of flat, low cut sneaks. I comfortably wore for around 8 hours before I started to really feel it, it looks to be some kind of PU/Foam hybrid(ie on the firm side, these are not ultraboost's..) with a suede/microfiber sockliner to boost the luxury feel and control odor. Surprisingly, on 80+F days my black pair didn't toast my toes. The collar is slightly padded and the midsole's tastefully done lest to attract too much attention, there's just a slight amount of drop in there too. You may be asking; is there anything they're *not* great at? Well, that same microfiber sock liner lends toward your feet slipping around a little; it may wear off in a couple of months but, the alternative is to lace uncomfortably tight, it's also not going to help on the real hot & muggy days. I wish there were more colorways available. Bolder has too much going on to be attractive. So, it's black or, black then. You also don't get an extra pair of laces for you $100. Cotton laces fray, the tips tear off. These are facts of life. As someone who's worn a pair of Vans for most of my adult life, these are a relief. They don't do any one thing exceptionally well but, they do hit every single mark reasonably well which, in itself is exceptional. The Berner's have more grip, should withstand moderate splashing, are far more comfortable than your average flat-top, and maintain that unobtrusive look. They don't feel like I'll be trashing them in 6-8 months and, I don't have to bring my Moab's to go to the park or do the normal things that before would have me questioning my footwear life-choices. I think I'll buy another pair..

Very comfortable & supportive shoes These are very comfortable shoes. I wear them 8+ hours/day at work both indoors and out. As advertised they are a hybrid of the sneaker and hiking shoe.

Good foundation and support, well made, but squeaks. Love the way these shoes feel and look. Good support for my flat feet and strong, wide footbed. My issue is I have been wearing for 2 weeks now and they don't stop squeaking with every step. Tried talcum powder to reduce but still loud on every step. Don't try to sneek up on anyone in these.
