Comfort
Doesn't last - by , Jan 22, 2018

I wore through these boots in 9 months which is depressing given the cost. The pair of Bates I had before those only lasted 6. Seams always break and the whole thing just falls apart. But that's twice as long as a cheap alternative lasted so I keep coming back.

I have wanted a pair of BATES boots for some time now, I finally decided on this book because I adore the look and love the reviews. I have an usually wide shaped foot and need a 10.5EEE, when I got the boots in the mail they were just "10.5 Extra Wide." Having ordered them on Amazon I complained and got no where. The initial fit was very tight but I decided to break them in, my pinkie toes were numb a few days but then the leather streched and they become VERY comfortable. Which is amazing really, all credit to Bates superior quality. HOWEVER, three weeks in now and the seam where the leather meets the sole is coming apart on both sides all the way around, on both boots. I am heartbroken. I had already decided that Bates Boots are the only shoe im ever going to wear again. And they still might be, I realize a lot of this may be due to needing one size wider, but still. I can't afford to immediately order another pair after just 3 weeks, however I leave for deployment in a few weeks. If a get a wider pair someday and the seams don't come apart then I'll probably wear Bates for the rest of my life because I love the boots.

Just ok - by , Dec 26, 2017

Love my old Bates which is what made me look at them when I needed new ones but was disappointed to see that there was literally only 2 women’s boots with a safety toe option which made me have to look into the men’s boots. Went off the sizing conversion I have always used when having to buy men’s shoes and the boots were still a bit too big but not big enough for me to be able to go down to the next size. The toe box is pretty wide which actually causes some side to side movement and my pinkie toe rubbing against the side of the boot at times causing a blister. The insoles in the boot itself are pretty comfortable and my feet usually don’t hurt from just standing 10 hours or more (besides the discomfort mentioned above). The side zip feature is great although the lacing right at the bend of the ankle makes it difficult to slip the boot on and off comfortably unless I completely untie and loosen the boot up

This is the second pair I have bought. - by , Dec 16, 2017

Comfortable well made. Wear them everyday for work. My order got mixed up and they originally sent me someone else's order. After talking to customer service three times I finally got a representative who understood the mistake and got it corrected quickly.

Serves my purpose for working in my Correctional Facility, real and true leather that can hold a shine with polish. Durable and comfortable indeed.

As a Lighting Technician, I needed a durable, comfortable pair of boots that work well on a variety of surfaces (primarily indoors). The sole began to separate from the toes just 6 weeks after date of purchase, the zippers never worked well and broke after only 7 months of use. A friend tried to warn me about the poor quality Footwear, I wish I had listened.

I'm a construction worker and a big fan of black leather boots, especially composite toe and water resistant ones. I've had a brand called swat, a brand called 5.11, and both times I got a size 11.5 extra wide and they were a little too loose. When I bought a similar pair of boots from bates, I ordered a size 11 extrawide, thinking they would fit perfectly. They actually fit almost the same as the 11.5s of the other two brands. Try a pair on before you make a decision and get the fit that's right for you.

Overall, I have very much liked these boots. I received them in November, 2014. I’ve worn them for 12-hour days about 3 days a week for over two years. (I avoid wearing the same footwear for two consecutive days to give them time to ‘recover and air-out/dry internally’ between uses.) I wear them under many conditions, including my day-to-day job where business casual is the norm. With slacks, they pass for dress shoes (at a glance) and they give me the ankle support I need. The outside has held up, even with substantial off-grid hiking. Usually I wear out soles in a year, but these soles have worn lightly even with my substantial walking on asphalt. Externally, they continue to work great, but the insides have worn out. I think this is the first pair of boots/shoes that I wore out the insides before the outsides. That said, they aren’t perfect. I experienced the same big toe to composite toe collisions as “Sad Medic” from Huntersville describes. The blisters on the top of my toes were rough for the first month, but manageable by wearing them once every three days for the first month. Once the callouses developed, the pain was gone, but the callouses took a full 2 years to begin to subside. By March of 2017, the boots were fully broken in. Sadly… just a few weeks ago (May 2017), I experienced the same boot failure that “Timing Is EVERYTHING” from Chicago mentions, specifically the heel lining failed, then the cardboard behind that failed. Unfortunately, when I tried reinforcing with Gorilla tape, my foot was pushed forward just enough to put my toes into collision with the front of the boot. I debated whether to buy another pair of the same model; however, today I decided to try something a little different for the summer, so I purchased the Bates Sock Composite Toe Chelsea. With a little luck, the will break in a bit quicker.

Yes, with some reservations.

I used to love Bates products - by , Apr 08, 2017

I work in EMS and for years have loved these boots, sadly after I recently purchased my last pair back in December when the boots arrived, I tried them on and from right out of the box the zipper kept getting stuck in the liner. I contacted Bates and they let me exchange my boots for a new pair, when the new pair arrived they had the exact same issue as the first pair with the zipper getting caught in the liner while trying to zip up or down the boot right out of the box. Again, I contacted Bates but this time just asked for my money back. I am sad to say I would no longer recommend this product as of now until this issue is resolved.
