Ok, so I'm going to write this review because I am so completely satisfied. And because I researched the heck out of this purchase, and I know there are concerns about sizing and so forth, and now I can add my experience to the mix.
As I said, I researched like crazy before buying these. I have a wide foot. And a high arch. This makes for trouble. For example, I have a pair of Frye boots I've been wearing for years, and still can only just get my foot in because of my arch. Before getting the Sorels, I did try the Ralph Lauren winter boot, and - alas - the arch problem prevented me being able to fit in.
But these worked like a dream. Sorel is a high end brand, and they know their stuff about making serious shoes/boots. I didn't have a problem with getting my foot in and out, very easily.
Before I moved here to NYC, I'd been living in Seattle, and the Fryes were perfect for warmth and durability in the wet weather. We didn't get a lot of snow or ice, so that wasn't an issue.
Until I moved here. The snow. The ice. The slush. I knew, especially after this past storm, and from observing how folks here all wear heavy-duty boots, that I had to get something hardier than the Fryes. I didn't want to subject them to the serious slushy wet snow, and I worried also about the Fryes not being able to grip the road as well as I needed.
These ARE wide, no doubt about that. And they ARE heavy. I don't mind the heaviness - in fact, that's a sign of their strength and durability. And I adjusted very quickly. I got them in size 9 and I'm glad I did. The 8's would have probably fit, but I learned from my horse owner friend that having roominess is important for being able to move and shift my balance. They are a mite roomy, but I can wear thick socks in them. Though they are so incredibly warm I don't feel the need.
I love love love the color, too. I think this review says "brown," but I got the grey. Gorgeous. I've gotten lots of compliments, and I've even seen other women wearing them around town. They are seriously stylish. I'm 57 - not into passing fancies or wearing shoes for one season and replacing them every year.
You can't do better than these, really.
