Put them on and go. Great support for feet and legs with a lightweight shoe. My feet are a bit wide and the fit is perfect with a medium sock. This is my 3rd pair, worth every penny.

Comments about Merrell Radius:

I originally purchased & then returned a pair of the Merrell Arc Chameleons in exchange for these... the Arc was not built like my Ventilators which I was replacing, the Arcs were very narrow & virtually no room in the toe box. More for people who want to look like they hike when they don't.

These Radius are almost exactly like my old Ventilators, except for the following:
1) The tread is very different, but in a great way. The traction feels like it has a good, sticky grip, they feel very stable, & the materials look like they will last much longer.
2) The new Q-angle sole technology that helps stabilize women's foot strike position, & knee/hip angles. They feel good, very stable. The Q angle is not a made up marketing device, I learned about it when receiving physical therapy for a leg injury.

Yes, they are stiff at first, but if you are really hiking you DO NOT want a flexible shoe because your ankles will not have any stability. The tongues were quite stiff & bit uncomfortable at first, but no blisters. I walked close to 3 miles in them the first day (on an easy trail) & after putting about 27 miles on them during these first couple of weeks, the tongues have become softer & the shoes themselves have become as flexible as they need to be to keep providing the stability hikers are supposed to. A great shoe, I hope Merrell never stops making this style, no matter what name they decide to give it.

Not a flexible shoe
By AK in NJ from New Jersey on 2/2/2009
Cons:
Not flexible, Poor Cushioning
Describe Yourself:
Recreational Walker/Hiker
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Merrell Radius:

I love Merrell shoes and think they are some of the most comfortable on earth. I am looking to replace an old ventilator type pair so maybe my expectations were too high or I just picked the wrong shoe. I found the Radius to be way too stiff when I tried them on. I know they require time to break them in but if my foot is not remotely comfortable at the get go, I don't want to take that time. Also, the arch support seemed to be lacking which really surprised me. I will am planning on returning the Radius but will definitely go with another Merrell shoe.

Comments about Merrell Radius:

I started with regular hiking boots then tried these, no blisters as with the boots, fit great out of the box. Had my daughter send me a second pair after about 500 miles and again they fit great no blisters. I only wish they had a different type lace the round ones tend to come untied even if double knotted. I thought I might miss my higher boots for the support but these were great with spenco backpacker inserts.
