I bought these boots to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I had never hiked any great distance before and was looking for a warm sturdy shoe to last me for the eight day hike.
7 of the 8 days I had no problems. They gripped well for bouldering and the general hiking. Getting into camp the night before the summit I appreciated that though the rest of me was cold and damp, my feet were quite comfortable.
Summitting, my feet did get cold, but it took a few hours. I've got some damaged toes from the descent because my feet were sliding a bit in the shoes (and I was pretty wiped so stepping carefully on the scree was not easy).
Boots seemed a little tight at first, but they broke in fine to where I could where medium cushion hiking socks with a liner comfortably.
I wore these boots every day for the 42 miles and 19,340 vertical feet of our trip. I would definitely buy them again. They were everything I was looking for. My legs would get tired on the eight hour days, but my feet were never sore or tired.
I also wore them in training in the sweltering hot Washington, DC weather and my feet were usually warm but not uncomfortable. They do show wear a little easily on the outside.
I like to buy shoes only once so I'd rather buy good quality. these boots are great. They were wearable right out of the box. I had tried on ankle height boots in a store and ordered these blindly and was pleasantly surprised. I wore these all over Seattle and also walked several trails on the Olympic Peninsula. These were comfortable.
Pros: Love the style, fit, comfort, durability. Boot is excellent. Light feel but totally stable (steal frame ankle). Loved so much I bought water shoes from same brand - also excellent.
New to hiking, didn't break them in. Went on a pretty epic trip and was super happy.
First use was a 9m hike in Bryce - perfect. Comfortable, excellent.
Second hike (next day) was a 10m hike in Grand Canyon.
Third hike (2 days later) was Zion, Angel's Landing. Used the water shoes for The Narrows (Zion).
Cons: minor, but could use more padding on inside ankle.
I bought these before going to Scotland because I wanted a waterproof boot for walking in the notoriuosly wet, boggy highlands in September. I knew that it might be hot or cold, so I didn't want an insulated boot. I wore them for the first time to walk through the boggy fields and they were perfect: kept my feet totally dry even though I walked through deep puddles in the rain; were cushioned inside so I felt my feet were crdled lovingly; and I felt very secure in them. And what a bonus -- the color -- I chose the Red -- actually more like a ruby or Alizarin Crimson, and it looks very true to the color on the website -- maybe a tad muted and not as intense -- is sooo pretty, I find myself looking down at them while wearing them. I have never had a pair of boots I have loved so much, so unequivically. I also wore them to walk around in cities and didn't feel like a clodhopper because of the pretty color. Now that it's winter where I live, I wear them with warm socks and there's lots of room.
