About Sebago

In 1946 in the wooded state of Maine, a brand was born. A local body of water, Sebago Lake, provided the inspiration for the name of what was to become the Sebago-Moc
Footwear Company. “Sebago” means “big stretch of water” in the Indian Abenaki language and the Sebago Company would live up to this name as it began a journey that
would, in fact, stretch ahead many decades.

The inspiration for the origin of Sebago can be traced back to Dan Wellehan, Sr., the owner of five independent shoe stores that spanned the state of Maine. World War II had drawn to a close and consumers were again optimistic with money to spend. Wellehan could not keep his stores stocked and he hatched the idea of starting
his own footwear manufacturing company to ensure that his supply kept up with demand.

Footwear industry veterans William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau were introduced to Wellehan and they soon formed the partnership that became Sebago-Moc. With Cordeau’s manufacturing background, Beaudoin’s patented moccasin welt
construction and Wellehan’s drive to succeed, Sebago hit the ground running.

Today, Sebago offers its classic styles and ever-popular Sebago boat shoes in more than 80 countries. Forging a partnership with a global leader, Sebago found a home as part of The Outdoor Group division of Wolverine World Wide, Inc. along with Wolverine’s outdoor brand, Merrell.
