These socks are worn daily by my husband for work and recreation. They take a beating since he is a welder and metal fabricator. They are his favorite socks, he wears a size 13EEEE shoe!
I am a backpacker + hiker and am particular about my equipment. I go into the Wyo & MT backcountry for 7-10 days at a time and like to enjoy my equipment as well as the outdoors, its my main hobby.
First off, I found out my favorite socks were out of production, the Fox River X-Static Xcursion. I still have a few pairs to enjoy but was wondering what I would use in the future that was made of a high content Cool-Max and without wool. I came across the Lorpen brand and decided to try some.
Secondly, I was afraid they might not be what I was looking for in the way of a durable weave. I have looked at and owned a few prs of Thor-lo's and do not care for them. I also own about 12prs of Wigwam Ultimax that do not get used cause I do not like the way they perform, nor do they keep their shape.
Thirdly, I was a bit worried that since I fall at the end of a (Lorpen) size range and the beginning of another (sz 10) that I might find a med too confining and the lg too long. The large fit very well. They are very snug, but not too snug. They do not seem to fold or bunch beneath the foot or at the end in the toe box.
I have not had the chance to backpack with these yet but have day-hiked using these socks. I was using heavy Salomon Super Mt 8 boots in a moist upper 40F's overcast with showers afternoon and found the socks kept my feet very dry & comfortable while hiking over 9mi of moderate up & downs at an athletic pace.
Later, from an outdoor supplier, I bought several pairs of Lorpen Cool-Max Extreme's, their Thermolite's, and their Trekking CoolMax Fx Modal and found all them to be quite suitable for my "hobby". But I can recommend these "Work-CoolMax" for all an around sock. Actually, I think these will make a better warm-cool weather hiking sock than their higher priced and thicker hiking/trekking designated socks; I bought 6 pairs and may also buy their "Hunting" Lorpen's.
For the lightweight backpacker: These only weigh 3oz/pr. The Coolmax Extreme's weight a bit over 5oz/pr ( Their other socks I mentioned weigh around 3.5oz for an idea about the differences)
I have been wearing these through the hot summer days as well as the cool winter ones. I usually have sweaty feet but they never really feel wet (even on the 100 degree days), the moisture really does get wicked away very well. I really love these socks they are extremely versatile.
