I'd have to describe the Portage as pretty much Butt Ugly. It delivers on performance, however, and will win you over in a hurry with what it DOES if not how it looks. I was looking for a river shoe in a "Wide" width. There aren't many. I really wanted an enclosed body and not a sandal. There are sharp rocks in the Salmon River. When the Portage arrived, I found that it fit with about the same sizing as New Balance athletic shoes. I wore the shoe with wool socks during a six-day river trip. There were occasional side hikes up to about a mile, and I had zero problems with the shoes. I went fly fishing when I had a chance, and the Portage made a great wading shoe for that.
