these shoes are excellent on the trails. i also have the cascadias 2. both have a smooth transition and good traction. they're pretty light and have good heel stability. my only complaint is the toe box of the 3's seems a bit more narrow than the 2's.
I have been running trails with 3 generations of the Cascadia. Why do I keep choosing this model? Rugged performance! Whether running for an hour on the trails with Hank (my energetic Weimaraner), or a 50K over rugged mountains with friends, the Cascadia is my shoe of choice. It provides comfort and stability despite long hours on the trails, and wears better than the competition. Bottom line: THIS IS A FIRST CLASS SHOE!
I actually am writing about my Cascadia 1 shoes, which comments I imagine would carry over to the 3. These shoes have grown on me. They are slightly heavier than the minimalist variety, but for that extra weight you get protection and comfort. I ran a very muddy 50k in these, and they served very well: drained quickly and provided useful traction. My one complaint is that the toe box is a shade shallow for me, so I get blisters on the tops of my 2nd toes. Never blisters anywhere else.
