This is the third pair of 749's that I have owned and I intend to buy another 2 pairs soon just to keep in my closet for when New Balance stops making them. They are easily the best and most comfortable shoes I have ever owned and I don't see how they could be improved upon. They are heavier than typical trail runners, but once you wear them for a day or two , you can't tell the difference

Even though I ordered a wide, it was much too narrow, far more so than most other shoes (trail, athletic, hiking) I use.

This shoe felt somewhat smaller and narrower than my other shoes of the same size, but not uncomfortably so. Actually, with this tighter fit, it felt more stable. I would buy this shoe again, however, if I intended to wear them in cooler weather with a heavier sock, I would go 1/2 size larger and 1/2 size wider.

The shoe fitted snugly, but I guess that's normal for hiking shoes. The heel was definitely not snug. It wore a blister after less than 2 miles.

I spent 5 weeks in Europe and had the 748s as my only pair of shoes. I put well over 100 miles on them. The 749s are the same quality as the 748s. The shoes give great support. I wouldn't hesitate to take these again to Europe. They are great to get around in and dressy enough to pass with a pair of khakis and a tie.
