I wrote the 'cruel shoes' review. Happily I can say that after many wearings I am able to wear these shoes without bandages to protect the back of my heels. The shoes have broken in enough that the stitching at the top of the opening no longer gives me blisters. Even so, unless I am only wearing the shoes a short time I still wear the bandages because it feels better.
They look great, and aside from the problem I reported (fixable with a few bandages), they are comfortable. Something else I like about them is they are silent.
One other minor complaint though is that the shoe laces do not seem very durable. Their color is unusual so finding replacements when they wear out will likely mean using a color that does not match as well. It would be nice if they were a little stronger.
I am submitting this review for the updates, and to rate this shoe with 4 stars to balance out my previous lower rating.

Even though it's prone to chafes, they enhance the appearance to have that "rugged" look.

The shoes have a seam at the top of the foot opening that badly chafes the back of the heel. They gave me bad blisters after only a short time of light walking. Maybe they'll soften with wear, but since the problem is a stitched seam in a bad location and that isn't going away, I'm skeptical. I will not wear these shoes if this problem persists much longer. I don't understand why so many shoe designers make this mistake.
I also wish the sole were stitched all the way around the shoe -- the front is held on only by glue. This can't be as durable as if like the rest of the shoe the glue here were complemented by stitching.
Really too bad, because the shoes do have many pluses:
- great style;
- wider toe box does not scrunch your feet;
- good support for the balls of your toes;
- lightweight;
- a little extra height under the heel;
- the oiled leather is nice and easy to maintain.

I bought these shoes for a guy friend. I think the shoes are really cute (Don't tell him I said that). My friend liked these shoes and he does wear them. If I were a guy- I would totally wear these shoes.
