Oliberte at OnlineShoes.com
Made in Africa by Africans, Oliberté shoes for men and women are offered in hip, casual styles that combine durability and detailed craftsmanship with a social conscience.
Oliberté was founded in 2009 with the goal of creating fair-wage jobs, bolstering local economies, and contributing to the growth of a thriving middle class, thereby enabling craftspeople, workers and suppliers to support their families with dignity and raise themselves out of poverty. By building a world-class footwear brand, Oliberté has not only created thousands of jobs, but also continues to encourage manufacturers from other industries to locate their businesses in Africa.
With the main base of operations and primary manufacturing plant based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Oliberté sources most of its materials, components and machinery from Kenya, South Africa, Mauritius and Liberia, ensuring that Oliberté shoes are as "local" to the continent as possible. The premium, free-range, hormone-free leather and cotton come from Ethiopia, the natural rubber from Liberia and Ethiopia, but due to the company's rapid growth, Oliberté continues to seek out new partners in additional African countries. Suppliers and farmers are thoroughly researched to ensure that they care about the environmental impact of their production processes and treat employees well and with respect. Gender equity is also prioritized: Approximately 60% of employees at the Oliberté factory are women.
In September 2013, Oliberté’s plant in Addis Ababa became the world’s first Fair Trade Certified™ footwear factory. The team there worked hard to pass more than 255 compliance factors and several audits by Fair Trade USA: Oliberté remains on the forefront of supporting sustainable, safe jobs in sub-Saharan Africa and is well on its way to being a leader in the global industry. Furthermore, this means that, as of Fall 2013, Oliberté shoes and boots became the world’s first Fair Trade Certified™ footwear.
New styles are introduced twice a year, for Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Made from African rubber and leather, each handcrafted Oliberté shoe, sandal or boot utilizes approximately 1,000 stitches of varying kinds, a dedication to quality that enhances durability and reduces the need for glue in the construction process.
Fair Trade Certified™ Oliberté shoes for women and men are ideally suited to hip, urban style-conscious shoppers who like to know their purchase is doing good in the world—just look for the small red "Oliberté flag" on every shoe or bag.
