Exactly What I Needed

In order to rate a shoe, or any piece of equipment, it is important to clarify what you need it for. This light hiking boot is exactly what I need for my profession and fits what I have come to expect in the name, PATAGONIA. I am a combat soldier and an instructor for security related training. I run courses in both wilderness and urban environments. I have 2 pairs of boots for my work: one that must be very robust, durable, with strong ankle support for carrying heavy backpacks and a second that must be light and durable for hard use with no weight on my back allowing me to be quick and agile. This shoe fits my needs perfectly for a light boot. During the first week they pushed uncomfortably on the front of my ankle, however, once worn in, they are my most comfortable shoe. They do not have the problem of being too narrow like most boots. When you're really working hard out in the bush, your feet will swell some and you must have a shoe that will allow for some toe movement. The sole extends up the front to protect the shoe against abrasions that are common across the front of boots. The sole has good traction and the added quality of being constructed from some percent of recycled materials (always nice to know that you're part of the solution). They are very light and fit well. This is not a running shoe, nor was it made to be a running shoe, however, I can walk quietly through the brush because they are snug to my feet and I can feel the ground beneath me. I can burst into a sprint, if need be, unlike a heavy boot that is clunky and awkward for running. I use these shoes hard and I would recommend them to anyone who is working hard, jumping, and climbing on un-even ground.

Good trekking Boot

I've done managed about 15k in my new patagonia nomads, but already I'm impressed. They are well constructed with high quality uppers and an exceptionally grippy sole. They provide more grip than my Nike ACG trail shoes. I haven't yet tested the Nomad's waterproofing, bar the odd puddle, but due to the build quality and the Gore-Tex lining, I'm not expecting any problems. I'll give them a sound coat of bees wax based proof, after the rest of the initial spray coat goes and that should really sort any issues the attractive 'fashion' stitching may create. So far, most of my break in walking has been on the flat, so I cant really comment on the support provided. What is worth mentioning is that the boots have been very comfortable from the start. I really cant see them needing much more breaking in. I probably could've unboxed them and walked all day without any problems!! All in all....the nomads are functionally a very good boot, they look good enough for the street and with their (and patagonia's) environmental credentials, they are a fantastic purchase.

Good quality, but missed some details!

The Patagonia brand has always intrigued me, so when it came time for a new pair of durable hiking boots, I opted for the Nomad GTX - forsaking my loyalty to Merrell! While I believe these boots are very well made for the most part, I experienced extreme discomfort around the ankle area - seemingly caused by stitching where the tongue is attached to the boot. Seems like a small issue, but it caused scabbing on one ankle, and when you are constantly climbing, hiking, jumping, etc., it becomes a big issue. I should have listened to one other reviewer who apparently had the same problem with the stitching causing discomfort. For a [$] price tag I expected more!

great starting point

I am longing for a trail runner or light hiker that is mid or high and thought this might be it. It's not. It's havier than say, the Nike Moab, which they stopped making for some reason. So, it's a decent hiker but not a good everyday boot.
