Dan GerlerDan Gerler, President and CEO

Dan Gerler, president and CEO of Onlineshoes.com, found success in cyberspace the old-fashioned way: by honoring his roots.

Growing up, Dan learned his most important lessons in business from his father, Kuno H. Gerler, who opened a north Seattle Red Wing shoe store in 1968. Dan often helped out in the store, and early in life witnessed the rewards of offering customers unparalleled value and service. At age 11 he sold his first pair of shoes, not realizing it would be his first pair of millions.

As the business steadily grew over the next few years, Dan was increasingly exposed to its inner workings. When it came time for college, however, he took a detour of disciplines, studying philosophy and psychology at the University of Washington where he graduated with double bachelor of arts degrees. With aspirations of becoming a lawyer, he began working at a Seattle law firm in order to gain practical experience.

Soon after, his father suffered a massive stroke and was not able to return to work. Dan stepped in for an interim period and, while he hadn't anticipated an extended tenure in this new role, he committed to steering the company forward. He became its president and CEO in 1983, and opened stores on the East Coast soon thereafter.

A decade later, as rumblings of the Internet were growing louder, Dan began to imagine a venture that could exponentially increase the company's sales volume and geographical reach. In 1996 he launched Onlineshoes.com, working with a handful of employees and a single computer out of a back room in the original Seattle store. The team built a highly successful operation, fulfilling orders for the masses one shopping cart at a time.

While the dot-com boom brought opportunity, it also brought fierce competition. Wholesale vendors were inundated with proposals from fast-talking e-tailers. Ironically, it was perhaps during this techno-revolution that Dan's traditional brick-and-mortar training paid off most. He spoke the language of the trade, a talent that forged trust with vendors like Rockport and New Balance, which are still top sellers among the more than 150 brands available at Onlineshoes.com today.

Looking back at his 30-plus years in the shoe business, Dan attributes his good fortune to a grounded approach and an exceptional team of people who are driven toward a shared vision - a vision that reaches far into the future.

An entrepreneur at heart, Dan ranks the operation of Onlineshoes.com high on the list of his personal interests. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis, reading and traveling the globe.
