Resolve to Walk: Week #4

Resolve to Walk: Week #4

Step out with Peter, Onlineshoes.com’s Executive Family Man, as he walks to better health.

Hi Gang!

My update is that I had a middling week. I walked once during the week BUT I ran once and walked this weekend. So I am still close but no cigar (does anyone really reward people with cigars these days?). Anyway, I am walking TODAY! Yes, Monday, the busiest of all days. I am getting out. It is a beautiful day and I am ready to go. If you see a blur of black and brown going by at roughly the size of a 6-foot-tall human being in downtown Seattle…that’s me.

Some of our readers have commented that they really appreciate walking (running, hiking, etc.) with a buddy. They lean on their buddy for some fun chatter during the walk and for encouragement to get out in the first place. So we thought we would celebrate the walking buddies in this blog by offering a fun and easy contest!

I’ll give away two pairs of New Balance Walking Shoes to one person (a pair for you and a pair for your buddy). All you have to do is submit a comment below that tells me a little about your walking pal and how you keep each other on the path to success. Stories, anecdotes, etc. are all welcome! What forms of bribery, cajoling or coercion has your buddy used to get you out and walking? Just share your story and we will do the drawing in about a week. Remember to come back to check and see who wins!

Resolve to Walk: Week #4 New Balance Giveaway

***UPDATE 01/28/2010***

Thanks to the help of Random.org we have randomly selected one lucky Get In Gear reader to win two pairs of New Balance footwear valued up to $125.00.

Congrats go to:

may1927My buddy can put me to shame. I’M the one who isn’t too thrilled about walking, so she keeps me going. Guilt does it. She is so eager to stay healthy and me? I’m eager, but I want it to happen without ME doing anything! BAD! Anyway, I’ll keep on trying to keep up with her and maybe we shall both benefit from it.”

Thanks to everyone for their wonderful submissions, and make sure to check in with the Get In Gear blog often.  We’ve got many more giveaways on the calendar!

By Peter L. Newborn twins, a toddler, two pugs, one busy wife and a more than full-time job as Onlineshoes.com’s Chief Marketing Officer has Peter moving on all cylinders. Unfortunately, none of that energy is spent working out. Peter resolves to make time for himself and his health this coming year by stepping out of his busy routine to walk himself back to fit.

  • My walking buddies are my husband and little boy. In reality, my little boy probably insists more that we need to go on a walk. “Mummy, we need to walk today!” Enough motivation in itself. Now only if the rain would stop!

  • My walking buddy is my husband. He’s such a great supporter and he really gets me out and about, especially on those off days that I have no motive.
    Thanks so much.

  • My walking buddy is my mom. She had foot surgery about 10 years ago and has trouble with her feet. We get together and go for walks to help improve her feet. My buddy helps me stay motivated because I know I’m helping her help herself make her feet better. I also feel better after we walk together. I would love to be able to give her a new pair of New Balance shoes.

  • My yellow lab is my walking partner. He is very persistent and how can I resist taking him for a walk when he looks up at me with those big brown eyes? And if I do ignore him, he just steals my shoe and stands in front of me to try to get me to chase him.

  • My walking pal is my husband. We are training to walk the Undy 5000 in October to raise awareness and money for colon cancer research in my Daddy’s name while he bravely battles colon cancer.

  • My kids are my walking pals. We go to the gym in the winter and walk the track. In the summer, we take walks in the park or go for hikes.

    —By agordon10 on January 20, 2010 at 4:26 pm
  • My wife and I like to walk. We usually walk at the track in town, especially during the spring, summer and fall. We do a good job of motivating each other and have a lot of fun doing it.

—By pstanos on January 20, 2010 at 4:31 pm
  • My walking partner meets meat 6:30 every morning. If it is nice, we walk outside. Bad weather we walk through our work hallways. She keeps me in check as during our walks we discussed what we ate the night before and what extra we did to get more exercise in. I love new balance as they are so comfortable. I hope to win us a new pair, as we wear ours out quickly with all of the walking. I swear Ishould take stock out in shoes.

  • My walking buddy is my mother. We keep each other motivated by using humor and comraderie.

    Thank you. :-)

  • My husband is my walking buddy. It’s great because when one of us isn’t feeling like a walk, the other laughs and gets them going. We have some great talks while we walk.

—By fangirl on January 20, 2010 at 5:00 pm
  • My walking partner is my sister. We encourage each other to get out and walk, push each other when we are ready to give up and enjoy the time we have with each other

—By Nadine L on January 20, 2010 at 5:05 pm
  • Walking is the only exercise I do anymore because of my age and condition. I walk up to four miles a day with my wife, or alone. My wife is still working, but I am retired, so I have more time to walk.

—By wwwtwisi on January 20, 2010 at 5:22 pm
  • My husband convinced me to take up hiking as a pastime by presenting himself as a model of perseverance and desire to live healthy. This is the only form of “coercion” he has used with me, his inspiring attitude.

—By Catalina K on January 20, 2010 at 5:29 pm
  • I go with my friend Rita. She has a lot of weight to lose, easily 100 lbs, I have about 25. I wake her up with a phone call since I am such an early riser, and we meet and do 2 1/2 miles before the kids wake up. It’s wonderful to have a buddy for support, very important.

—By cdziuba on January 20, 2010 at 5:30 pm
  • My walking buddy is my son. He always complains that I walk to fast for him to keep up. Ther is a two mile track around my neighborhood that I also plan on running one day soon.

  • I walk my dog for half hour each day just for exercise and fun. It’s our quality time together.

    —By gracieg99 on January 20, 2010 at 5:40 pm
  • My walking buddy does not need shoes because she has paws. If I feel lazy, she started to give me “the look” along with sad eyes. It gets me moving and we enjoy the walk.

My Mom would be my shoe clad buddy though we do not see each other enough to exercise together often.

—By Belinda on January 20, 2010 at 5:44 pm
  • When ever the phone rings before our scheduled time to walk,,we answer saying,,,No way,,we are just going to do it! And we also just put on our sneaks,,and start to walk and we are thankful that we didn’t NOT go…My buddy and I need some new good sneaks and we always only buy NB!!

  • My husband and I walk together. We’re good motivation for each other. It’s easy to shrug off exercising when you only have to be accountable to yourself, it’s much harder when you have a witness.

—By jlmk on January 20, 2010 at 6:13 pm
  • Mine would be a running pal, there’s a jack russell looking mutt who often sees me coming and runs me all the way to the bridge then waits until I return. It’s almost like she’s on parole or something and cannot cross state lines!

    —By ky2here on January 20, 2010 at 6:18 pm
  • My daughter walks with me when we can get together. Sometimes we walk late in the morning so we can have lunch afterward as a “reward”. (But we do order something light and usually share it.)

—By Aisling on January 20, 2010 at 6:49 pm
  • My walking friend is someone I met at church. She comes over to my house whether either of us feel like it or not. I love how we hold each other accountable! :)

  • My wife is my walking buddy. We try to walk together as often as possible, but sometimes our schedules do not allow. But she keeps me honest and motivates me to walk even if she cannot walk with me.

  • My friend, Heather, and I love to walk together. We get exercise and caught up on all of our gossip. We love NB shoes…

—By kselman on January 20, 2010 at 8:19 pm
  • My walking pal doesnt wear shoes on his 4 paws but he does keep me going on our long walk every day. I found out that I was boderline diabetic and started eating right and walking to keep from having to take meds. My 13 yr old pomapoo walks with me every day and gets way more excited about our walk than I do so when its pouring rain and we dont walk I feel like I am disappointing him.I would do almost anything for this little dog even work hard trying not to be sick so I can love and take care of him.He would be very happy if I won shoes and would gladly give me his pair because that would mean many more long walks with his favorite human.

  • My walking buddy is my teenage daughter. Every morning we walk around the infamous “one mile wall” on Duke’s west campus. As soon as my daughter’s feet hit the gravel, she chatters away about clothes, happenings at school, friends, teachers just all the cares of a teenage girl. She loves our bonding time when she has me all to herself. I smile, because she could out walk me with no problem, however, she slows down her stride to match mind and chatters away…… my how the time flies by.

—By Marla on January 21, 2010 at 5:09 am
  • My husband is my walking pal. We keep each other motivated on days “we do not want to walk”. We have all the excuses to not walk, but we encourage each other try to keep it fun and relaxed. We have started walking farther and faster now too which really has been fun and quite an adventure for me as I am quite a bit shorter than him. But so far, I am keeping up.

—By nealts on January 21, 2010 at 6:19 am
  • Hi. I’m a 40-year old widow of a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. He was partner, but now I share life with our two dogs and two cats. My dog serves as my partner and constantly reminds me that I need to get out and walk and YES, I need to walk because I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis a few years back and one of the best ways to maintain flexibilty and use of joints, even when they hurt, is to exercise. Walking is important to my future and my pal, Storm, makes sure I do it. We walk about 2 miles a day.

  • My BFF of 35 years and I walk the local track 3 times a week. We really don’t have to encourage each other because we view it as a chance to get together and talk while we walk.

—By traymona on January 21, 2010 at 7:09 am
  • I walk with my kids, the dog, my hubby. Whomever I can guilt, bribe or coerce into it. Last person to walk with me was my son and while he complained about doing it he had fun (he probably won’t admit it) he and the dog chased each other and I got to go for a bit of a RUN too, lol…

  • My walking buddy is my friend Jane. It’s great that we walk together – usually if one of us isn’t quite as motivated (to walk period, or to walk more, or pick up the pace…) the other one is! Great balance that gets us both out and moving!

—By Suzanne K on January 21, 2010 at 7:24 am
  • My best friend and I enjoy going for walks together. We like to use it as a time to catch up on each other’s lives and gossip about celebrities. That’s usually enough to motivate us although sometimes we throw in manicures if we can make it a certain number of days.

  • My walking pal is my husband and I’ll admit we are way too lenient with each other especially when it’s 30 degrees out and there’s 18 inches of snow and ice out. But when it’s nice, we like the long woods path behind our house that winds around a large pond.

—By meredlp on January 21, 2010 at 9:16 am
  • My husband is my walking buddy. We have recently moved to a new area and are committed to seeking out new paths for walking (as soon as we get all of the boxes unpacked!). We motivate each other on those days that one of us is lagging. And we both wear New Balance, great shoes that have the proper width as well as great style, so we would love to win this.

  • When I hear people at the Senior Citizens center that I attend say they are too old for walking I want to strangle them. I have been walking for pleasure and fitness for more than 60 years and lest you think I was a fitness freak I will tell you that I also smoked for 30 years. I wized up and quit that 19 years ago this year but still developed emphysema so I cannot walk as fast or as far as I could before but I still walk at the mall, just strap on my portable oxygen and do as much as I can. My first pair of trainers were New Balance back in the 80′s which my daughter got me at Macy’s and am on my 7th pair now. So at 74 would like to win another new pair for me and my friend Shelly who is a kid compared to me (I am 74, she is only 58)but she had polio as a child and it left her with walking difficulties which she works hard to overcome. We are actually a funny pair, me with my portable oxygen generator hanging off my shoulder and Shelly with her funny gait chatting away and strolling around the mall.

    Thank you.

  • My walking buddy is my husband. We both love walking in our surrounding neighborhood and enjoy the beauty around us. When one of us is not motivated to go walking for one reason or another the other will put their walking shoes on and give “the look” the results in a sigh but then eventual agreement to go out for a walk. We always end up feeling better and glad we took our walks. =)

  • My walking buddy is a large rambunctious Foxhound. He’s more of a runner, however. I prefer to walk, but if he sniffs a deer trail or spots a critter in his path… we’re both running. He must know that I need it.

And speaking of shoes and my lovely Foxhound, they sure would come in handy … as my dear Cosmo just chewed mine to pieces.

  • My new years resolution was to start being more active. I figured walking would be the best way to start. My darling Hubby agreed to help support me by walking with me, plus we get to spend time together. I took my walking shoes out of the closet and my hubby laughed. He said “after you blow the dust off of those shoes, we may have to buy you another pair!”. We were both laughing. These will have to do for now. I would really love a chance to win your contest. Please enter me.

  • Recently I had the foot problem known as “Plantar Fasciitis”. I followed the treatment plan as directed by my Podiatrist, and then I bought a pair of New Balance shoes, also as directed by my Podiatrist. I never would have believe that there was such a tremendous difference in sports shoes but there really is. I’ve worn several other brands but the New Balance are the most comfortable and support my feet better than any other without orthotics.

  • My walking buddies are my daughter and her Great Dane. Just the sight of the dog frequently makes for good conversations with others, and she also makes sure that we walk at a fairly brisk pace. She could certainly take off on her own, but is very content to walk beside us (or at least at the end of her leash). There is the additional fact that having the dog to walk makes us get out no matter what.

  • My mom is my walking partner. Five days a week, we go up to our local YMCA and walk the track. If I try to slack off, she will call me a million times! She has even gone as far as driving over to my place and getting me out of bed to go to the gym!

  • My hubby and dog are my walking buddies. Even when I do not feel like it, I do it because I know how much my dog likes her walks and I really do feel energized when I get back. Doesn’t hurt that I am losing weight too–that’s an added bonus.

  • I don’t have a walking buddy, because I found that it works against reaching my goal. I like to go when I’m ready to go, and I don’t like waiting around for someone else. Waiting exhausts me! Plus, if the buddy can’t make it I’m much more likely to take the day off myself.

—By Barbara on January 23, 2010 at 4:38 pm
  • My parents are my buddies. When they come to visit we walk in the town cemetary and occassionally stop and reflect on people who are no longer with us.

  • my walking buddy is my niece and recently we’ve begun running. we are motivated by the challenge itself and the thoughts of finally being fit. if we skip a day from being lazy or bad weather we never fail to remind each other that we need to make up for the lack. the other motivation would be that we do not want to fail. failing this would mean we are just lazy and our pact meant nothing.

We have a baby on the way so after baby comes we will be doing a lot more hiking and walking. We keep each other on the road to success by encouraging and never giving up when it gets tough or face a challenge. In doing this we really accomplish a lot. We are learning more about each other every day.

Even when it’s cold, we bundle up and walk – gives us time to reminisce and get great exerrcise – we love walking!

She sees me put on my walking shoes and she is right there. She is fun and entertaining. She hates the metal sewer grates (with holes)because she’s afraid that she may fall in it…I pick her up and carry her over and past it. Dogs are great walking companions! :)

Our rule is that if one of us mentions exercising, the other has to agree! That way we workout every day (usually 2 times a day).

However, one of my coworkers and I have been taking walks during the late hours when it’s less busy. It’s nice to get out of the office, so that’s really all the motivation we need. Also, it gives us a chance to talk.

  • We have 2 absolutely adorable and very feisty dogs Max and Lucy. They are black labs and they have the most enjoyable personalities. My walking buddy is our next door neighbor Debbie who own a golden retriever. We walk our dogs, all 3 of them, at least 3-4 times a day. We are both stay at home moms who also have a zest for keeping in shape and enjoying the 4 seasons along the lake we live on. Whether it is raining outside, snowing and blustery winds, or a gorgeous balmy summer day, we take our furry friends out for a walk. We generally don’t need much coaxing of each other to get our butts out there, our dogs, and the fact that nature is calling them, is our motivation. But I have to say, we usually always treat one another to cups of java or latte’s at our local mini mart that is along one of the route that we walk on. That is always a nice treat to have while we enjoy our brisk, long and very frequent walks!

I know one thing for sure, we both desperately need some new decent walking shoes. We are both moms to large families and having the extra money to treat ourselves to proper walking gear is right now a luxury we can’t afford. It would be super terrific to have new sneaks for our New Year workouts!

Thanks so much for the chance to enter.

We do a good job of talking each other into going to the gym when we’d rather stay warm inside. We were fortunate enough for a 50 degree day this past weekend and took a walk through the river (on a boardwalk).

  • My walking buddy is my hubby. I am 54 and he is 56 and we walk in our neighborhood which is very hilly so it gives a great workout. We walk for about 45 minutes every day we can except if it pours then we have to use the treadmill. We just are strong to prod the other one if one wouldn’t want to, but it is fun walking and talking with him and I prefer this to any other workout because he makes it fun.

  • My walking buddy is my next-door neighbor. We live right by a greenway (not a golf greenway, but a place the Town can’t build on for one reason or another, so they have a paved trail through the woods), so I love to walk there every day. My neighbor has trouble getting motivated to walk, so I call her every morning. If she has an excuse not to walk, I still have to walk by her house both ways, so then she feels guilty that I’m walking alone and she usually makes it the next day. I’ve never told her that I really enjoy the peacefulness of those morning walks so I don’t care whether she walks with me or not. But she doesn’t know that, so she makes an extra effort to walk with me :-)

  • I lost one of my walking buddies this year, our beloved dog and haven’t felt like walking much since. My husband loves to walk though and I am determined to enjoy walking again even though it is a little sad right now. Thank you!

  • I walk with my fiance. We just got a gym membership. We’re there to support each other and motivation. I remind him how good it is to walk and he’ll lost the inches and pounds.

  • My best friend and I have known each other for 15 years. I love her to death but we’re both very competitive. We log how many miles we complete and compare everything from time to distance to speed to see who comes out on top each week. Whoever comes in second owes the winner lunch the following week!

  • I rotate through the family as walking buddies, depending upon whose schedule I can impose. There are some wonderful walks close by and I so appreciate the time to just connect with each other and with the outdoors.

  • We walk before lunch, so no walk = no food (not really – sometimes the weather is too bad). We encourage each other and laugh, so it’s fun.

  • My walking buddy is my husband. He’s OK for a couple of days and then I have to prod him to get up & go. After he gets started though he is fine. Of course we are in our 60′s but still try to stay in shape.

  • Thanks for the giveaway…Most mornings you will find me running / walking (a mile each way) to a local park with Maxine, my Yellow Lab. It is Maxine who awakens me most mornings, early, it get a move on so she can get going to the park to play fetch & “do her bid-ness”. If it were not for my dog I think I would be sleeping in more & exercising less. Oh, the wife would rather sleep in but she occasionally joins us on weekends !!!

  • Heidi is my walking partner. She’s my dog who wakes me up early to remind me that it’s time to face the world. We bond as we walk.

  • My walking buddy is my best friend, my Mom. :)

We harass each other constantly, in a humorous way. We can talk to each other like two silly girlfriends and that’s a great thing. Even as an adult with a family of my own, we still eat as a family most nights and make sure everyone eats right. If one of us has a little extra chunk or we’re not looking our best we can be up front with each other just as well as we can compliment one another.

We just have a great all around relationship. On a side note, it might seem pretty dorky and we do make fun of ourselves quite often for it but we have a couple pairs of identical shoes. :)

    Thank you!

  • I don’t have a walking buddy. My work hours are totally different than my friends and family. I walk at the local middle school track and there is usually someone else there, but no one I know.

  • My walking buddy is a friend who is really motivated to get in better shape. I always think I should exercise more, should go for a walk, but usually find a reason not to do it. I am someone who really needs a buddy!! Once I get started each time I like walking, but I need someone to get me out of the house and motivated.

  • Actually my walking buddy is my youngest son John. After I was injured by a drunk driver in 2001 that put me in a wheelchair for 3 1/2 years. I thought I would never walk again. But lots of encouragement and a bit of tough love got me up and moving again. Day by day I find I can do more, go further and look back on how far I have progressed. It comes down to putting one foot in front of the other and making sure you have someone beside you who has the heart to go the distance even when you think you can’t.

  • I’m a genteel southern belle with a penchant for telling people what to do, exercise-wise, and my walking partner is a Puerto Rican New Yorker who glares when I tell her to walk faster but does it anyway. lol. We are quite the pair, and we walk mostly during the weekend (very busy weekdays make weekday walking impossible).
Two weekends ago, we were walking in the evening. On our third lap around our 2.2 mile block, it had gotten pretty dark. We live near wilderness – ha! – and something wild had decided to sit on the side of the road and wait for us, maybe? Anyway, we were two feet away and it started grunting and moving. We both screamed and it took off into the brush. Since it was dark, we couldn’t tell what it was, but let’s just say our strides were a bit quicker after that!
