So it’s the time of year when we all look at the big opportunity areas in our life. I noticed that amidst all of the busyness of business, children, home, community and friends that I had left some personal business undone. That would be my personal fitness… Yes, my metabolism did a belly flop in my late twenties and now I am sneaking up on 40 and just looking at a candy bar takes my waist size up.

How can I work in more than the weekend warrior runs down to the Kirkland park with my daughter, Caroline, in the jogging stroller? It’s great to get out twice a week but otherwise I have been pretty immobile. I take a car from home to work and back again. Then I have dinner, hold and feed the twins (yes, I have 2 week-old twins, Henry and Emma). Then I walk the dogs but they don’t walk far and grumble the whole way (yes, I am the proud owner of two pugs, Ruthie and Beatrice). I change the twins’ diapers and feed them again. And then change their diapers. And then I fall into bed and awaken for a new day.

Here’s the new plan, my new resolution for a new year: I will walk during my lunch break three times a week. A nice long one. There are great sights to see in this fantastic town. Seattle has a great downtown with culture and shopping. Of course there are Pike Place and incredible views of Puget Sound. I walked down there today (and got a fantastic lunch to go). My energy level went way up and the day flew by productively.

I wore my New Balance walking shoes with Thorlo Walking socks today. Great comfort and a feeling of walking on air. Literally, it felt like I was bouncing along the pavement. And, for city walking, I think you need that shock absorption. The pavement can be punishing.

Now the trick is how to really get out three times a week! I will need your help…the readers of this lovely blog to help cheer me on. Come on. It’s a new year. Lend a busy execu-dad your energy! And get out there yourself. See you on the pavement.

By Peter L. Newborn twins, a toddler, two pugs, one busy wife and a more than full-time job as Onlineshoes.com’s Chief Marketing Officer has Peter moving on all cylinders. Unfortunately, none of that energy is spent working out. Peter resolves to make time for himself and his health this coming year by stepping out of his busy routine to walk himself back to fit.

  • i am a person that was once very active and all of a sudden stopped. i am going to try start by walking 3 days a week @ lunch. I am in Houston, Texas so the weather is mild most of the time.
    Wish me luck.

  • Thanks for sharing your walking goals Charlene. 3 days a week is my goal too. I am doing ok. Had some slips. But I did a run the past two Saturdays to try to pick up what I had lost. Give us an update as you go!

  • Go Pete!! I can picture you out walking and filling up with energy to push you through your busy days. You have a great plan…start with three days and then, yep, add another. I know, I am pushing you but I think moms can do this without any guilt. As you move towards 40, I first hit 60…whoa. We both are moving into a new decade and a new opportunity to build upon our inner core both physically, mentally and spiritually. P.S. Good shoes are crucial to staying in the ‘game’ (as you know).
