Will I ever stop torturing myself?!

Molly Malaney-Mesnick Training for the Chicago Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon

Well folks, it has been a while since I’ve graced you with my fitness woes. But alas…I’m back! It seems that as soon as one “challenge” in life ends…another begins. Today is no different!

Jason and I have been asked to participate in the Chicago Rock n Roll ½ Marathon. Neither of us are great runners, but we thought, “Hey, why not give it a shot and just try to finish.” So we agreed. What we failed to consider is…the marathon is in 3 WEEKS!

Now, rather than freaking out and killing myself with 2 a day runs, I’m taking a chill pill and viewing this as a fun adventure…much like my attitude when I found out there was a tsunami warning on my wedding day…which was to be held outside! If I can stand the rain on the most important day of my life, I certainly can take on 13.1 miles with 3 weeks of training, right? I guess we’ll see.

In the meantime, I haven’t put myself on a strict training schedule. Rather I’m just trying to get out and run every day. How far? Well…as far as my body will take me. Yesterday I went 3 miles. This weekend, I am hoping to get up to 5. That’s still a long way from 13.1, but at least I’m doing something!

I figure if I get my endurance to a decent level beforehand, the music at every mile marker and screaming crowd will take care of pushing me a little bit further than the body would normally go. There is one thing, however, that WILL get in the way of successfully finishing this race without passing out before we cross the finish line…the EVIL Midwestern summer weather that can feel like a sauna. It could be 90 degrees, and the minute you walk outside you feel like you just stepped out of a shower from the humidity in the air. THAT is out of my control, though.

For now, all I can do is keep running on a daily basis…and pray for 70 degrees, a cool breeze and partially cloudy weather…not to get too specific or anything :)

I’ll be back with the final results…if I make it to the end that is!

  • Wow Molly! I am so excited for you and Jason! Will it be hot there still in 3 weeks? Be sure to drink a lot of water. I have heard horror stories about folks running in those kind of crazy races and getting sick from too much heat, and not enough water (or food). I’ll be sure to check back to hear about your race! Go Molly!

  • Hi Molly,

Wow! Sure have to hand it to you! The heat here on the east coast is a killer lately too.
Since you are such a shoe fanatic, any recommendations of a good running shoe?
I have decided it is time to fight that middle age spread and get back in the gym myself (hired a trainer just today!) and I need to start running. I am somewhat older than you, so I have to take it alittle slower!

  • Molly,

Sounds like you are doing great as far as preparations go. It was a great idea not to push your self, going 3 miles is great and if you keeping adding on a few miles each run, before you know it you will be ready for the marathon. If you need to take some walking breaks in between miles that is okay too. It helps build your endurance. Just remember to keep your breathing in line, and stay hydrated and you should be fine.

Best of luck to you and Jason
