Resolve to Run: Week #3

Resolve to Run with Molly week #3

Keep pace with Molly, Onlineshoes.com’s Reformed Couch Potato, as she gets back in shape.

What’s your motivation? How about a free pair of shoes!

For me, doing the same old thing every day can become very monotonous and boring. I lose interest quickly, so I needed to switch things up this week. Rather than running 5 times, I broke it up with circuit training sessions every other day.

On Day 1, I was determined to hit that 3 mile marker, even if it took me 10 hours. Because of that, I was sure to schedule this run for Sunday, when I had some extra time. The run ended up being pretty smooth and enjoyable, and I think that is because I went into it with a great attitude. It’s unbelievable how your mood can directly affect how well your workout ends up.

On Day 2, I headed to Elite Fitness Training for a one-on-one circuit training session with a personal trainer. Since I am a beginner, I would have no idea what to do if you dropped me in a gym all by myself. This girl needed a professional’s guidance to make sure I got in a good workout. For 60 minutes straight, I was moving from exercise to exercise. We did anything from simple bicep curls to lunges while dribbling a basketball to boxing. The trainers at Elite do a great job of pushing your body to its max while keeping the workout exciting.

Day 3 was another running day. I made it to that 3 mile marker, but I owe this completely to the new playlist I put together for my iPod. If I didn’t have peppy, new songs popping up every 3-4 minutes, I never would have made it that far. Hey, whatever it takes to keep me motivated, right?

On Day 4, I was off to another exciting circuit training class.

By Day 5, I was wiped out. Just the thought of going for a long run made me tired, but I didn’t let that stop me. Thankfully, my circuit trainer from Elite Fitness put together a great cardio routine, which was made up of 4 different components. I started with 2 miles on the treadmill. This was a little tough to get through, but I had run 3 miles earlier in the week, so I had the mentality that I was “taking it easy” on this run. From there I was on the bike for 3 miles, then 1000 meters on the rowing machine, and finally 20 flights on the stair machine. This was definitely the best type of workout for a day that I thought I was too tired to exercise. Each component was short enough that I didn’t feel like it was too tough to complete. But all together, it was an hour’s worth of cardio.

I have successfully completed 2 weeks of my New Year’s resolution, but I will say that it is starting to get difficult to keep myself motivated. I am doing whatever I can from alternating my workouts to updating my playlist. Now I need your help! What else can I do to keep this exciting?

I’ll give you a little extra incentive to submit a comment below…you may win a free pair of ASICS® shoes! Help me stay motivated this week and I’ll give away a pair of ASICS® shoes to two lucky readers.

How do you stay motivated?

  • Hey Molly! I would love, love, love some ASICS running shoes!

I keep myself motivated by coming up with what my fitness milestones are, and then coming up with prizes for myself for hitting them.

If I run X days this week, then I’ll splurge on a one dessert. If I run X number of weeks in a row successfully, then I’ll buy myself a new pair of nice jeans, etc.

    Good luck!

  • Bring a buddy running with you, and to the gym. Instant motivation/support system!

  • I sign up for a race to keep myself motivated. I usually try to have one race every month or two and that keeps me on track. Also, I keep a journal and write how I feel shortly after my workouts. I notice that I usually feel a lot happier, energetic, and stress free after a good run.

—By jill on January 12, 2010 at 8:51 pm
  • Running the same route over and over can bring me down. I like to switch up between pavement, unpaved bike paths, and trails. Often times I will leave my watch home – it is nice not to have to worry about pace.

I keep “Another One Bites the Dust” at the end of my play list. It helps after I’ve finished a run or workout that I wasn’t particularly motivated about in the first place.

  • Molly,

Wow!! You’re on a roll! You have all sorts of good things going on! The way I motivate myself is with friends, what better than a friend to push you (and a little friendly competition never heard anyone right??). Also, you should try hot yoga, its a relaxing yet intense way to get a good workout in and trust me, it’s a workout!! Good luck!!

  • Molly, Congratulations! You’re on the right path. Your mindset is 90% of accomplishing your goals! The fact that you are paying attention to that is a great start. I have 2 mottos when it comes to working out. “In order to change – the pain of remaining the same must be greater than the pain of change.” What is it that is so important that it’s worth getting up & working out? That’s what will keep you motivated! My other motto is “Something is better than nothing”. There are going to be days when you’re tired – physically or mentally. That’s normal & it’s ok to give yourself a break. On those days, ease up on your workout. If you run 1 mile instead of 3 pat yourself on the back for getting out there & accomplishing something! You’ll feel better for having done it and it’s alot easier to continue when you see the positive rather than the negative. Another tip, make a list of what “excuses” you have a tendency to make & then experiment with different exercise routines that eliminate as many of those as possible. Time of day, environment, type of exercise, alone or with someone, instruction or self motivated, music or tv… What works for you may not work for others around you. Love yourself & enjoy the journey! You’re off to a great start!

  • I’ve learned that my best motivation for staying fit is the rebound effect of cardio. I NEVER feel like starting a run, but I know that after ten minutes, the endorphins kick in and I never want to stop running! So I make a deal with myself– if I don’t feel like running after ten minutes, I can stop.
    I never stop!
    Thanks.

  • Congratulations on your progress. Keeping a diary of your progress is a great motivator…or even adding to this blog each day so we can all cheer you on. Think of a reward you would like and work towards a set goal and then you earn that reward.
    Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for this giveaway.

  • Music for me is at the top for motivation and having the “Buddy” systems helps alot!

—By Donna Bowers on January 13, 2010 at 12:14 pm
  • Bring a buddy running with you and set goals for each week. Say for instance I will run X number of miles this week and stick to them
Celebrate each week if you achieve all your goals. Buy yourself a treat or a pair of jeans to go with them new running shoes. What happens
if you don’t achieve or meet all your goals: Try harder, don’t beat yourself up for it. Things happen beyond your control. Just do the BEST that you can.

  • I recently have had a trans metatarsal amputation (TMA) of my right foot and am being fitted with my orthotic/prosthetic this Monday and am looking for a good pair of walking shoes to start with so I can get back to my goal of running. It will be a slow go at first getting used to things but I am ready and have set the goal. I was told with my current configuration I will be able to use regular good shoes once again.

  • I have been running for more than 20 years, so yes, motivation is a struggle! I find motivation through my running group and running buddies. Participating in races from time to time also helps, as does trying something new every once in a while, even if it’s just varying your workout. Too many cookies over the holidays motivated me to add to my running regime, so now I do the 30-Day Shred in addition to running. Keep up the good work!

  • I walk every day with my dog and my motivation is my DOG! If I dont get up and put her leash right around 2pm every day she will whine and beg until I do. There’s no backing out of this! LOL!

If I dont keep up with her (speed walking) she will drag me down the street so I’M WALKING!

  • Thanks for the sweepstakes.

—By bksup on January 13, 2010 at 3:41 pm
  • I recommend highly that to keep yourself motivated.. you plan a reward for yourself at what I call rewards levels.. Things you want or have wanted but always felt it would be too indulgent for you to buy!

Example: Are you trying to loose 30 lbs? Then every 5 lbs you get a small reward, every ten extra pounds you get a larger rewards and at the acheivement of the goal you give yourself a whopper of a reward!!

I have found that just the idea that I will be getting what I want as a result of achievement to be a wonderful motivator..

Weight loss doesnt have to be the goal either, it can be running faster, increasing performance at different levels, etc.. but Im sure you get the idea Im talking about here..

Now, please enter me in for my reward!! I need these Asics! My new goal is too loose weight and get back in shape.. not so easy when you are having health issues.. anyway.. set me in the right direction with these awesome sneakers to get me going !!

So one day I will run in the park, another day I will run through a college campus to check out the boys…I mean sites.lol. Mix it up with variety!

  • The thing that is keeping me motivated is to switch it up. Running every day gets boring, so I may set aside two days a week to do a workout from a DVD instead. I find that after skipping a day of running for something else, I really look forward to running again.

  • If just plain running is boring you, get outside and switch it up. Try trail running versus pavement, and find different trails so you’ll have different scenery. Run or do some serious hiking, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes just getting outside and enjoying nature will motivate you to want to DO something. Keep remembering how great you feel after you’ve worked out. It’s never a bad feeling, right? You know you’re doing something good for yourself. You’re doing great! Keep at it!

  • I work out on the treadmill (I’m new to it and very out of shape) and I have found that if I run at my own pace, I end up slowing the speed down pretty qickly, but if I do a pre-programmed workout I follow along and push myself to stay at the right speed for much longer. So I motivate myself by having an outside force pushing me instead of just myself, even if the outside force is just a pre-programmed workout.

  • I think you first have to identify why you want to get/stay fit.
For a lot of people it’s just to fit into a bikini and look good.
For others it’s so that they can stay healthier.
Put a picture on your refrigerator, or in your wallet- somewhere you will see it often- of something that shows what getting/staying fit means to you. Maybe using a picture of yourself when you were in better shape could act as motivation. Maybe a picture of where you will go on vacation after you’ve kept up your exercise regime for a pre-determined amount of time.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Molly it will be an ongoing process for the rest of your life to stay motivated to fitness. The key is to not work yourself so hard that you either injure yourself or resort to those feelings of “their is no way I can keep up this pace” attitude. It is all in your inner being as to how you continue. Excuses are just that, but from time to time you need to re-evalutate your goals and workout routine. What you started out as a good plan for the new year may be unrealistic and wearing you out, so set both short term and long term goals, keeping in the back of your mind you need to be flexible. It’s when you are so rigid and don’t reach your goals that you may give up and quit!!! We are all human and fall short in all aspects of our lives, but have to pick up the pieces and strive to be the best we can be. Hope this helps to motivate you to continue your journey not only in exercise but in your life ahead!!! My best always to you!!

  • I have found that the best way to break up the monotony of long runs that just start to seem all the same is to do some fartlek training….jog for a lap if you’re on the treadmill or a track/jog for a minute if you’re not able to calculate distance……then run as hard as you can all out for a lap or minute…..then run regular pace for a lap or minute….then walk for a lap or minute……you can just keep changing it up like that and I love my fartlek days more than any other days, they were what helped me get through training for a marathon…good luck!

  • Way to go– you should be proud of yourself already!
My tip: find a running partner for motivation on those days when you might not make it out on your own.

—By Shaun on January 16, 2010 at 4:37 pm
  • Set rewards for your goals. Ex: If you workout for 7 consecutive days treat yourself to a mani/pedi, for the next 7 days a massage etc.

  • If your resolution is weight loss, simply stay motivated by looking in the mirror.

  • I love to read, but I never take the time – I’m just too busy, so I tell myself that if I go to the gym and do all the machines that then I can read while I do the treadmill. It feels like a treat so it motivates me to keep going.

  • My biggest motivator is having a friend or co-worker go with me on my run. Though it never seems that they will keep it up, it makes for a great change in routine that really keeps me going!

  • I’m on a college track team, and I often have trouble getting myself to run over breaks when I’m not with my team. Besides thinking about how I want to lose weight so I’m closer to the size I was in high school, I think of my race goal. I picture myself running with really good form and everything going right, but I know I need to work hard to reach the time I want.

—By Brittany on January 17, 2010 at 7:30 pm
  • i thought i was doing well on my resolution, but i think you’ve left me in the dust

—By chromiumman on January 17, 2010 at 7:40 pm
  • One of my tricks for keeping myself motivated is to have smaller goals and rewards along the way. I started by getting some new music for my iPod, and it I keep with it for at least 4 days during the week, I treat myself to a latte while I do my grocery shopping, but my ultimate goal is to be in shape so that I can try waterskiing with the kids this summer!

—By dana on January 17, 2010 at 8:14 pm
  • When you get bored try running indoors like the Wii Fit. Most everyone has the Wii now and they have programs that make it fun to run and do yoga and alot of other activities.

  • Awesome! Keep it up!

Music is always a great motivator. New clothes motivate me. ;) Set goal, when you meet it buy yourself a new outfit and model it for yourself. Seeing a more fit you will be all the motivation you need to keep going.

    You can do this!

—By AmandaG on January 17, 2010 at 11:14 pm
  • I enjoy running. I try to stay motivated by running in a place that is enjoyable to me, like a park or at a nearby lake with a running path around it. I listen to my iPod, too. I try not to be to rigid as to how long I run — that seems to motivate me to run further!

—By Carolsue on January 17, 2010 at 11:59 pm

  • Living in WA it is hard because we have so many rainy days and sometimes it gets hard to think of exercising. I try to mix it up. I walk on the treadmill and I switch off to walk around the neighborhood. That helps with the boredom. Since my daughter is in need of exercise I involve her. She thinks she is there to support me and neither one of us wants to let the other down.

So have a partner/mix it up. My suggestions. :)

  • Set a target, a race or mileage goal by certain date.
Do not increase mileage too quickly, 1 mile every few weeks.
    Run with a partner.
    Cross train.
Have various routes for a variety.
Have playlists on your ipod to go with your pace, slower days or faster.
    Do not give up.

  • It really does help to have someone working out with you. They can keep you accountable. It’s also not as boring. You can talk and joke around with them so it doesn’t even seem like you are working out. Good luck!!

—By Crystal F on January 18, 2010 at 10:26 am
  • Track or journal your progress – I love to check out my pedometer which keeps track of a week’s worth of walking or running.

Plan your songs! Use your ipod or mp3 player to create a songlist with the right motivation & length- if you know you’re gonna need extra oomph at minutes 16-20, pre-plan & have a super motivating song set to play then.

Give yourself a rest day when you need one so your muscles can repair & rest.

  • It’s hard for me to stay motivated. Really good music to work out to is what helps me, too. Also, looking in a full length mirror gives me a push in the right direction. :) I am going to get on the treadmill right now while I am thinking about it. :)

  • to stay motivated i would write out a list of all the things i would be able to achieve once i was in better shape. I mean you’ll be able to breathe, and sleep better plus you will have energy. It also helps you keep looking younger.

  • I stay motivated by two things. First off, I am 54 and have arthritis so I found I must do some strenuous exercise every day which I do with my hubby. Second, I want to look good, not only feel good, so I work out and I eat low carb which helps me look younger. I never want to get overweight and sickly.

  • I keep myself motivated by looking at myself in a full length mirror…naked. It reminds me that I’m not as fit as I have been in the past. Call it shock therapy but it works. I also reward myself but giving myself a little bit of a break one day out of the week…maybe a piece of cake or a small plate of spaghetti. It helps to remind me that I’m not deprived and this is my choice. That knowledge is very empowering and keeps me motivated. I also set realistic goals because nothing kills motivation like failure.

  • Molly, congratulations on getting back into shape! Having a workout buddy (one that will actually push you) can really help in motivating you to try your hardest. I have a few pairs of Asics right now, but they are worn out because I ran on the cross country team in high school. They are the best running shoes I have ever had. Since I am a college student, I don’t really have any extra money to spend on a new pair. I would really love to have a new pair to get back into shape. Thank you so much for this great giveaway!

—By lmiars on January 21, 2010 at 10:51 am
  • Molly – couple thoughts on motivation for running. Go to a place like Green Lake where there are lots of people running & walking. The people watching is fantastic! Get off road and enjoy a place like Discovery Park or run along a shoreline. Watch and listen for birds and other wildlife. Soak in the beauty of Ranier or the Olympics to keep your mind of the excercise and focused on all the cool stuff to see and hear. Then of course get to your favorite coffee shop for non-fat latte or mocha! Enjoy.
