Resolve to Get Outdoors: Week #4

Resolve to Get Outdoors: Week #4

Reconnect to Mother Nature with Ron, Onlineshoes.com’s Suburb Escapee.

I need to remind myself frequently that it’s taken me years to get in this shape, and I’m not going to fix it in a few weeks. All things considered, it was another successful week working towards my goals. I bought a new scale, one that measures body fat, too. I lost three pounds last week and lowered the BF % several points. Not bad considering I have nine more months to lose the rest of it.

Eat Healthy

As Tremer suggested in the comments of my last post, I’ve been using the Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner for over a year. I think it was actually the first app I downloaded.

What I like most is I can pick a recipe and have all the ingredients at my fingertips if I’m at the store. The other thing I like is how the comments give you really cool variations on the original recipe.

I did a good job watching what I ate. Several nights of fish, and snacks were limited to fruit.

Weekly Training Routine

I kept on track with my workout routine. I logged over 15 miles between the treadmill and the trail run. I also did several nights of rowing on my Concept 2 Rowing Machine. I like the variations to the routine. I’ve never been a big weights guy but I’m considering a Bowflex to round out my home equipment and I would appreciate any insights others could share.

Weekend Outdoor Adventure

My weekend adventure was back to Bridle Trails with Bella for the 4½ mile loop. Dave and I have started timing the run so we can track our fitness progress. We’ve had a lot of rain in Seattle the past few weeks. The trail was particularly muddy which just makes it more fun. I keep towels in the car for the ride home.

When I get home I have to hose off my Vasque trail running shoes and put them on my PEET Shoe Dryer and they’re ready for next week’s adventure.

It’s still too early to consider any sort of hike above about 1,500 feet, but I can’t wait to lace up the hiking boots.

I’m still trying to figure out how to make time to run at lunch. Several coworkers have signed up for the Seattle Rock and Roll Half Marathon; I’m really looking forward to swapping stories of the training progress. I bet we’ll be running together here when the weather starts to warm. I think I’m going to reach out to some of our suppliers for a cool performance top, so we all dress the same and have a presence at the event. Team Onlineshoes…Look for us!

  • How do you get motivated to get outside when it’s super rainy? Working out in the rain just isn’t very enticing. Infact it sounds miserable and cold!

  • Keep it up Ron! A past 40-something coworker got a bowflex and within just a couple months, not only could once again make it up four flights of stairs without a sweat, but finally had a six pack that didn’t have the word “Bud” written on it. I say go for it!

  • Bringing your dog is key. I have so much more fun exercising when I can watch my dogs frolicking on the trails. Go Ron & Bella!
