Giveaway: Merrell Origins Hiking Shoes

Merrell Giveaway Closed

Merrell has been crafting high-quality performance footwear for three decades and now, to help celebrate their anniversary, they’ve created the Merrell Origins collection. These great-looking hiking shoes offer a return to classic Merrell styling, but use the latest materials and engineering for advanced support and cushioning. So, when you’re out hiking with your pals, you’ll get all of Merrell’s legendary comfort served with a big side of pure, classic cool. And they could be yours free.

That’s right, we may have invited ourselves to Merrell’s anniversary party, but at least we’re bringing presents. We’re going to hold a random drawing and give way FOUR (4) pairs of classically cool Merrell Origins hiking shoes from their Eagle and Solo style lines. How can you get in on the drawing? It’s easy; just use the comment section below to provide a short answer to the question:

What is the coolest thing that has ever happened to you while hiking?

Did you see a double-rainbow or maybe find a hidden lake? Perhaps it was just one of those days where everything went a little better than perfect, and even the photos turned out great.  Whatever it was, we want to hear the hiking story you tell your other friends (we’re Friends, right?) when it’s time to wow them.

But first, let’s have a closer look at the prizes. You know, to get your creative juices flowing. The Merrell Origins Eagle hiking shoe has an instantly-comfortable suede and mesh upper, with an EVA insole for shock absorption. We could drill down on all of the features, but really, just look at it. Awesome.

Men’s Merrell Origins Eagle Hiking Shoe

The Merrell Origins Solo hiking shoe features the same great suede and mesh upper, Merrell Air Cushion heel and EVA insole as the Eagle, but has a lower profile around the ankle. Just remember, the Solo is “so-low”. The style harkens back to a time when color was king, suede was everywhere, and people used the word “harkens”. Have a look at this beauty:

Women’s Merrell Origins Solo Hiking Shoe

As long as you’re here (and already planning the rest of your outfit to wear with your new Merrell footwear), you may as well enter the drawing. Just don’t wait too long to answer the question; the drawing ends 11:59 PM (PDT) Wednesday, August 24, 2011.

  • My favorite memory hiking was the night we woke up to a mouse that had gotten into an energy bar and was scurrying all over the place. That morning we also were the only ones on the lake and enjoyed the sunrise.

  • Every year I volunteer as a chaperon for a girls camp (ages 12-18) for my church. Frequently the girls I work with are unused to being outdoors and are sometimes unsure of their abilities. However, it is such a treat every year to see them discover themselves, help each other out, and learn to enjoy the nature that surrounds them. I love watching them fall in love with being outdoors and learning to help each other in a positive way. Nothing is more beautiful than a group of girls who have learned that they are worth something, and that they can conquer anything!

  • One of the coolest things that happened was discovering ancient ruins below the cliffs in Mule Canyon in Utah. My husband and I had gone to see the Cave Tower Ruins which are small structures on top of the cliffs. We didn’t know about the structures below the rim. We were able to work our way down to them and found tiny ears of dried corn laying on the ground within the walls. This is a very little visited place and I could almost feel the presence of the ancient people who lived there.

My first pair of hiking boots in the early 80′s were Merrells. I have had many pairs since then. They are the best fitting boots for my feet.

  • My coolest hiking experience came when we were rafting the colorado river in Grand Canyon. We stopped at Deer Creek Falls and hiked up above it. We took a rope off one of our rafts to rappel down into the slot canyon. We walked/waded down through the running creek that sluiced through the narrowing slot canyon. One of our all time favorite hiking photos came here when we shot the creek pouring over polished sandstone out of a narrow convoluted opening with its curving pink/red/orange sandstone rocks. So memorable.

  • The coolest thing to ever happen to me on a hike was literally the coolest, or maybe that would be coldest thing to happen to me on a hike.. My friend Emily & I hiked up to the top of a little waterfall above Centennial, WY. When we got to the top, we decided to jump into a little pool above the waterfall. We stripped to our birthday suits. Em jumped first & swam to rock & then I threw our clothes down to her and jumped. When I hit the water the cold was so intense it seemed to suck the air out of my lungs. I heard a sream & then realized it was me!

  • The coolest thing to ever happen to me while hiking is yet to come! In 7 minutes, it will be mine and my husband’s 10 year wedding anniversary (shoes for a gift, anyone?) and we will be celebrating with a camping & hiking trip to Cumberland Falls in Kentucky. The pictures we’ve seen are beautiful and our only regret is we won’t be there at a time when the moonbow is supposed to appear.
A real hiking memory is last year I was on a morning job during a camping trip and I went on a trail in the woods, turned around and all of a sudden couldn’t spot the trail back. I felt so alone. No cell phone, no one knew where I was. Just was lost. I prayed, turned again and there it was! The way back! I’ll travel smarter next time, but I also know I wasn’t actually alone. Thank you, Lord, for helping me outta there! =)

  • When I first went to Korea in 1995 and hiked Mt Halla on the Korean Isle of Cheju, I was stopped by a Park Ranger who said I was not allowed to hike in sandals. He directed me to the park store to buy boots, but (un)fortunately, they had no equivalent to US size 11. I was allowed to hike, but he yelled at my mother and me saying if I hurt myself, they would not help me. Needless to say, I had no trouble at all. We had a wonderful hike!

  • Hiking Mt LeConte in the Smokey Mtns on our honeymoon… we had to give wide berth to a yellow jacket nest that had been disturbed, hike along a narrow ledge while holding onto a cable, and then my new husband had to calm my fears when we saw fresh bear scat in the middle of the trail. Thankfully he convinced me to press on because the view at the top was beyond amazing.

  • I wouldn’t say cool, but it was scary at first. After a recent deployment from Iraq, I decided to take my wife on a trip to Mount Whitney Trail, in Lone Pine, CA. While hiking the trail we though we heard a black bear and decided to move a little bit quicker to a covered area. Little did I know my wife slipped off a rock and down the side of a 200ft cliff. Miraculously I had a rope tied up to her, and with my Merrells keeping me steady I was able to pull her back up. Today we look back at it and laugh, but if it weren’t for great quality of Merrell; I would have never been able to pull her back up. Unfortunately those Merrells are destroy and no longer in use, but I keep them as a memento to what Merrell is capable of doing. Thanks Merrell

What a beautiful and memorable way to celebrate the new year. A pair of Merrell hiking shoes would have made the uneven lava much easier to navigate!

  • While hiking in Glacier National Park, I was on a narrow trail with a wall of rock on one side, and a long drop-off on the other. I came around the corner and there was a mountain goat on the trail coming towards me. I pressed myself against the rock wall to give the mountain goat as much room as possible. The goat passed me by and actually brushed up against me, and it kept on going down the trail. Very Cool!

  • My most memorable hiking trip was when I was hiking some trails at Lake Ray Roberts in Sanger, Tx. As we were hiking I got this sense of being followed. My brother turned and seen a mountain lioness following behind us. We hurried without running to the bathrooms at the top of the hill. Looked back again and the lion sprinted into cover. Then we heard some whining and noticed three cubs had followed her. We had to hide out in the bathroom for about 1 1/2 hours before she finally left. We joke about it and a lot of people don’t believe it, but we have pictures.

  • Bryce Canyon, Utah–on a backpacking trip we had hiked down into a canyon and I’d wandered off a little on my own to have a moment with nature. I’d sat down at the base of a large tree and watched the forest come alive around me when a small thunderstorm rolled in. The thunder reverberated through the canyon and I’d never heard a sound so pure and beautiful; if God had a voice I imagine it to be like that.

  • We hiked up to the top of the volcano, Mt. St. Helens, in southeast Washington, and just when we got to the top, we were hit with a warm wind and the sight of 1,000s of Monarch Butterflies. Why they were drifting in this breeze at the top of a mountain, I have no idea on why. But it was a beautiful and almost transcendental experience for me and my hiking companions.

  • Coolest thing or scariest thing – depends who you are! I set off on a solo hike in early June to summit San Jacinto and took a different route than I had in the past – I went around the backside and up the PCT. It wasn’t till I got up to around 8,000 feet or so I realized there were 5ft snow drifts…In JUNE!! I didn’t have poles, no crampons and no GPS and already hours into the hike – do I go back or push toward Wellman’s Divide which would take me back down to the tram station and a shorter route than going all the way back down and risking being on the mountain at night. I pushed through in 5ft snow drifts, often loosing the trail and almost always falling in hip deep – it felt like forever but made it about 1.5 hours later…

I learned a valuable lesson that day….BUY a GPS and tell people which route you were taking and poles are NOT just for old people!!

    Mark.

  • The summer I was sixteen, my mother and I hiked on the Appalachian Trail for a week with the Girl Scouts. She always taught me to take every opportunity to go and do things because that may be your only chance. You can’t hire someone to take a hike for you. You must have that experience for yourself. I am thankful she taught me such a wonderful lesson and shared this experience with me.

  • Many years ago, I was at a crossroads in my life. I had dropped out of college and had a dead-end job. I decided to climb a local mountain in Phoenix. In the heat of the day, I struggled to get to the top…then when I reached the top, I looked down and saw….soldiers. They were training on a nearby National Guard base. I sat and watched them for an hour…and admired their sense of purpose and discipline. I climbed down from that mountain and joined the army that day…stayed in 10 years. I have just completed a 20-year law enforcement career…I will always remember that day…That climbing trip turned my life around!

They were about 100 yards off the trail and so busy feeding that they were completely ignoring the gathering crowd of people watching from the “safety” of the trail. It was way down in the ditch so I had to climb down to get it. It was so old it had turned blue. I love old things so it made my day. My Merrell shoes helped by not slipping especially on the rough road. Love my Merrell shoes! Thanks!

  • It was my very first time hiking. A guy I’d met the previous summer on a study abroad trip suggested we go hiking in the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. Because I’d never been before, I didn’t think of little details like bringing water, wearing the proper shoes, etc. He kept promising me that the overlook at the end would make all my sweating and blisters worth it.

We never did see an overlook at the end. Instead, we passed a ranger who looked concenered and asked if we were okay. We said we were. When we reached the end of the trail, we realized why he was so anxious. There was a big sign saying the area had been closed for “aggressive bear activity.” Let’s just say I managed to get back to the car way faster than anyone thought I could move!

  • My best hiking experience was hiking part of the Appalachian Mountain Trail in New Hampshire over three days. We took on an overly ambitious hike for our training and found that going hut to hut meant a nine mile trek over three peaks one of the days…and then it hailed on one of them. The sights were beautiful, but finally arriving at the hut after 12 hours of hiking and seeing the look of my kids that we had all gotten in safely to warmth, food, and fellow campers was the best view of all.

The trail suddenly ended and as our mood progressed, we decided off trail hiking would be a fantastic decision. This hiking trip turned spontaneously into a camping trip. Nice! • On a mission trip in Uganda – ever morning we hiked up a mountain to build desks for the children at the school. We spend hours every day for a week building and sanding the tables. On the last day, we walked 20 minutes with the children carrying their new “desks” to their school. Seeing the smile on their faces when they were able to get off the dirt floor and sit at their tables was priceless.

  • When I was a teenager me and about 11 other friends decided to hike through some woods that was behind our neighborhood, we hiked for about 2 hours when we came to this secluded area that was just insane. It had a small waterfall with a small ledge that ran off into a double sized jacuzzi like pond. The pond was so clear and it all sat inside of what seemed like a carved out rock.

  • The coolest was hiking around one large hill — or small mountain, depending upon perspective — and realizing we had missed the short cut. We added about 5 miles to the afternoon hike (should have only been 5 miles) . The best was our two Golden Retrievers led us back to the car, even though I had to carry them (one at a time) over some sections that they could not navigate.

It was cool because we saw tons of wildlife, a couple of petroglyphs (or pictograms, not sure which) that we would have missed and, early on, met several other hikers with dogs. Turned out to be a great afternoon!

  • Looking back, the coolest thing that ever happened to me while hiking was … EVERYTHING! Just being able to be in the wilderness is a gift beyond anything. Being able to Walk, hike, just to be able to Do things in the wild has left me with memories that can last lifeimes. My friends who spent times with me in the wilderness still talk about it to their kids and grandkids, so it is lasting forever. I wish more than anything I could still do it. By the way, the UN coolest thing that ever happened was poison ivy. I discovered I was allergic to it and that mistake lasted for months!

  • It might not be the coolest but its the most striking and memorable thing! My husband and I were hiking from Stehekin which is at the tip top of Lake Chelan in Washington. It’s gorgeous and we were enjoying the mild summer day and the awesome trail that follows the lake. Suddenly we heard what most hikers over here dread, a sharp, quick rattle. Apparently it was rattle snake mating season! This older man came along and without much bother whacked his walking stick in the bushes and stomped right through. I refused the walk past angry, mating, recently beaten snakes so we hiked back to town.

  • I was out for a hike with my son. I had done the hike years before he was born and remembered the trail. Half way up the mountain his GPS failed and he wanted to turn back. I pulled out my map and compass and explained how everything would be fine. We were both able to capture some beautiful pictures mostly because he was not glued to the GPS. So now we bring the GPS only as a back-up for emergencies and enjoy the hike.

  • When I was a little girl, I was always roaming off by myself. Guess you could call me a “Loner”. While camping at the Pacific Ocean, my favorite place for Life, at about age 6 or so, I climbed the rocks out all the way to the end of the breakway (very not allowed). I met a very old man(75-85) and he taught me how to catch crab with just a string and a piece of anything, crabs will eagerly go for anything, sometimes just a moving/swinging pebble. Then, when it had a good hold, work it up through the rocks. I went back to camp dangling my trophies tied with the string he had given me. He told me how to have my mom cook them, and ever since, I LOVE CRAB! I showed my sister and all my cousins how to do it, but was not allowed to go again un-escorted…Sooo, my Grandma (Nan, I miss her terribly) went along. Of course, now I know finally at age 62, and now disabled, how dumb it was and how dangerous…but, I was always on some adventure, usually alone. And, no shoes like this, just ratty old Kedswith holes!

It was my first time hiking uphill and I kept thinking I couldn’t make it, that I would have to give up – but I kept pushing – and I made it! The view was spectacular, worth all the effort – and it was the coolest feeling knowing I made it! I’ve done alot of hiking since then, and that was still the coolest experience.

My walking turned out to be tree climbing as I climbed the tree to place the robin back in the nest. I somehow felt satisfied that this hike was truly a blessing.

  • My best hike so far had to be in Hawaii’s volcano national park. After hiking in for several hours with my best friends over the dark, jagged volcanic rock we were close enough to see the plumes of smoke from the lava flow spilling out over the edge of the land and into the sea. You could smell the sulfur in the distance and almost see the red glowing lava inching it’s way along the ground. It was by far one of the coolest experiences i’ve ever had!
