When is a Heel Better Than a Heel? When it’s a Wedge!

Women's Indigo by Clarks Plover Sandal

What style do most people picture when they think about women’s shoes? They don’t envision sneakers or loafers or combat boots. More than likely, they think of women’s dress shoes, classic silhouettes like the J. Renee Regina.

If you’re anything like me, however (and heaven help you if you are), what you probably want most is height without sacrificing stability. That’s basically my ongoing goal: I’m pretty short (5′ 4½”, if you really must know), and I’d happily grow four extra inches ALL IN MY LEGS.

Nothing makes your gams look better than a pair of sky-high stiletto heels, but that kind of va-va-voom can come with a price—in the form of twisted ankles, torn ligaments, knee pain, hammertoes, bunions…but enough of that talk!

Today, I propose an alternative to all those super-sexy high heel shoes crowding your closet that you’re too terrified to wear. Gentle reader, allow me to introduce you to the wonders of wedge shoes. The benefits of wedge sandals, wedge boots and the eye-catching platform wedge are plentiful:

  1. Overall stability is increased.
  2. You don’t have to worry about your shoe’s heel breaking off, because usually the sole is comprised of a single unit.
  3. They’re easier to walk in.
  4. They’re more comfortable while standing because your weight is more evenly distributed, and it is easier to maintain balance when wearing them.
  5. They won’t sink into soft surfaces, like grass or deep pile carpets.

Opt for a platform wedge sandal, such as the contemporary Tsubo Elger and you can gain flattering inches without forcing your foot into an exceedingly unnatural angle. What’s more, Tsubo’s heel and forefoot cushioning keep you comfortable and a curved sole aids in push off.

For multi-season style, the Naot Admire is a superstar for combining elevation with comfort. Everybody needs a pair of black high heels, and the Naot Admire mary jane makes a cute and versatile compromise to more conventional black heels.

Of course, wedges come in low-heeled styles, too, which can look as elegant and provocative as a kitten heel. Check out the Etienne Aigner Tender peep-toe wedge, a sweet patent slingback that is suited to practically every occasion.

Give your soles a break and spend a little time checking out wedge shoes, wedge sandals and wedge boots for women. Or learn a little more about high heels.

In closing, I’m just going to pass along two pieces of advice from footcare specialists around the world: First, most of the time, try to limit your heel height to 2”-2½”. I know, bo-ring, right? But remember, when you opt for a platform wedge, you can choose a shoe that combines a 1½” platform with a 4” total heel height without breaking that rule. Second, limit the length of time you spend standing or walking in heels to no more than two to three hours.

I promise, 20 years from now you’ll thank me. Oh, and floss your teeth more frequently. You’ll thank me for that, too.
