Being Green!

Onlineshoes.com Park Cleanup in Mulkilteo, WA

We hear the phrase “being green” a lot these days. With eco-friendly products, buildings, shoes and even fonts, it’s hard not to get in on the Green movement. What is hard is trying to figure out what to do and if what you are doing is enough! The good news is that there are an abundance of sites and groups out there to help guide you to a life full of giving back to Mother Earth.

Here at Onlineshoes.com, we have a Green Committee with some very eco-friendly employees who help us lower our carbon footprint by educating and encouraging individual efforts to living green.

We organized a park/beach clean up in the Seattle area at Picnic Point Park by partnering with KEEN and our local Parks Department to set up a clean-up event. We’ve also signed up for a TerraCycle brigade. Instead of tossing all our chip and candy wrappers in the trash, we send them to TerraCycle who turns them into cool products like bags, kites and clipboards! For every wrapper we send in, TerraCycle donates $.02 to The Nature Conservancy.

Our hope is that as our employees partner with us in our efforts to lower our carbon footprint, they’ll adopt some of what we do at work into their home lives as well. I know I’ve become a lot more aware at home of the things I do. I question everything I throw away, I ensure I’m not overusing water (turning it off when brushing my teeth) and I walk everywhere I can (instead of driving or taking public transportation). I also try to be aware when buying shoes (which I do quite often). I’m a huge fan of KEEN and their shoes are not only extremely comfortable but many are eco- and vegan-friendly. My favorite is the KEEN Coronado Slip-On for a casual, all-natural product.

We’ve learned a lot from each other and made some changes here in the office since starting the Green Committee. We’ve put up posters in the lunch rooms to remind everyone to recycle and we send out a monthly Green Tip through our company newsletter. It’s a challenge but a very rewarding one as we continue to turn our work place into a green-conscious office.

What kinds of green things have you done at home or work to be more green?

By Christopher J. As a member of the Onlineshoes.com Green Committee, Christopher J. has been charged with the task of encouraging coworkers to be green and reduce the company's carbon footprint. He is a die-hard Seattle fan who practices what he preaches: He walks…and he tries to keep his feet comfortable while looking good at the same time. His feet are happy and he’s happy.

  • I know this is a small way to be green … I’ve become OCD about turning lights off when not using them :)

  • I love this! I enjoy spoiling myself and family with the many great shoe options @ Onlineshoes.com, but to know they are doing it the GREEN-WAY! Even better!

I recycle all our plastic containers purchased at the store i.e., cottage cheese, sour cream, butter for Tupperware leftovers and we send food home with family and friends after a get-together in them…we also buy a lot of bulk vs. box goods and re-use the bags the bulk items were put in for a variety of things!

  • My wife and I started using a compost bin at home and it’s amazing how much it cuts down on putting things in the trash! We’ve been telling all our friends in hopes for more of them to start using it…
