It’s time for another round of Style Central, where we give four of our favorite fashion and lifestyle bloggers the same pair of shoes, ask them to style it however they like, and you get to vote on which blogger did it best. Our friends from Clarks paid a visit not too long ago and it was a lot of fun. We all gathered with a few Clarks execs in a great big room and Joe Salzano, the VP of Sales at Clarks, stood up and began to testify about Clarks—and I do mean testify in the old school Tent Meeting sense. If you’ve never had a chance to hear Joe speak, you should look for an opportunity. He is about as full of enthusiasm as people can get without exploding. Joe told us all about Clarks; where they came from, where they’re heading, and how they plan to get there (Spoiler Alert: It’s by continuing to make some of the best shoes in the world).

Patagonia and Healthy Child Healthy World



Patagonia Footwear is doing something pretty cool right now. For each and every pair of footwear they sell, they are donating $10 to Healthy Child Healthy World. If you are not yet familiar with the work of Healthy Child Healthy World, we’ll give you a quick introduction.

In 1991, five year-old Colette Chuda died of Wilm’s tumor, a rare form of non-hereditary cancer which was linked to various factors in her living environment. Her parents turned grief into action and created the organization which would become Healthy Child Healthy World. Their stated mission is to not only expand awareness of various toxic risks, but also engage with communities and advocate for changes in corporate policy and government legislation.  Basically, they are forging the tools which millions of people have used to take action in their communities to create cleaner, greener environments; places where children can grow and families can flourish.

Midday Madness Champion: Chaco!

It was an absolutely epic challenge for the Midday Madness championship. We had two world-class brands locked in a four-hour battle. Chaco came out early, and then Rockport poured it on strong. Chaco replied with a surge of votes, and Rockport rallied in kind. It went back and forth for four solid hours with the brands calling in fresh recruits from Facebook and Twitter. At the final buzzer, we had a champion to be sure, but historians will always wonder “What if..”  What if it was a little colder outside; would UGG Australia have advanced to the finals? What if Dr. Martens fans from across the pond chimed in; would there have been a second British invasion? What if Brooks hadn’t been edged out at the wire…well, we could go on and on. It’s the Grand Brand Championship Game of Midday Madness!

Congratulations to Rockport for winning their Final Four bracket and moving up to the championship! However, this is not the time for resting on our laurels. It is time to get our brand face on, pump up the music, and cue the cheerleaders; this is the 2012 Grand Brand Championship!

It’s been a challenging two weeks for Chaco and Rockport, as they faced great brands in one grueling contest after the other. While all of the brands in our Sweet Sixteen are notable for their style, comfort, and overall high quality, these two champion brands brought a little something extra to the challenge: fans, and plenty of them. Even though most people casting votes in Midday Madness have a bunch of our Sweet Sixteen brands in their closet, it’s great to see enthusiastic supporters who are not afraid to use an exclamation point or two to drive home their passion for a particular brand. It’s Round Two of the FINAL FOUR of Midday Madness!

Congratulations to Chaco for winning yesterday’s challenge and moving on to the Championship round! Today’s challengers are Rockport and New Balance! Which one of these two powerhouse brands will join Chaco in the championship round?

It’s another tough choice today, but you don’t get to the Final Four by being easy to pick off. At first glance, you may want to boil your whole decision down to a simple choice between athletic shoes and casual/dress shoes, but don’t be so hasty. New Balance has an enormous collection of athletic-inspired casual shoes and boots, and Rockport has a large collection of athletic shoes, including the new TruWalk Zero barefoot shoe. It’s Round Two, Bracket Three of Midday Madness!

Congratulations to Chaco for winning yesterday’s challenge and moving up in the brackets. Today’s challenge, the third in the Great Eight round of Midday Madness, is between Born and Rockport.

There is no doubt that the challenges are getting trickier as we move through the brackets. For years Born was my casual shoe of choice and Rockport was my go-to for special occasions and dress events. It’s just not that easy anymore. Rockport is breaking new style ground with looks I’d be more than comfortable (and they know comfort) wearing anywhere, and Born is crafting their famous comfort into more and more special occasion and dress shoes. But this challenge isn’t up to me, it’s up to you.
