The Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon was June 25th. The following day, on Sunday, June 26th marked the Coeur d’ Alene Ironman competition. With an entry to the Rock & Roll half marathon and as an Ironman volunteer, eager to support and watch my brother and nephew (yes, father and son) participate in the Ironman event, I had the opportunity to experience both of these popular endurance events.

What I wondered, as I wandered through the Rock ‘n’ Roll Expo in Seattle and then the Ironman Village in Coeur d’ Alene, was what inspired these athletes to remain dedicated to their goal. Why stick to it? Through the rain, in the snow, on cold, dark mornings or blazing hot afternoons – what’s the motivation behind all the pain and hard work?

So I did a little digging–or should I say–a little talking, to various athletes and compiled a list of motivational factors that seemed to weave a common thread between people training for endurance events. Here’s what I found:

Positive Thinking
Affirmations and mantras make a difference when it comes to setting a goal and sticking to it. Often these are especially useful in the midst of a hard workout or training session. As Scott Jurek told himself while running 165.7 miles en route to breaking the American 24-hour record in May 2010 “This is what you came for.” Repeating key words or phrases can help keep you calm, on target, and direct the mind away from negative thoughts and towards a positive outcome.

More Fun, Less Pressure
Rather than obsessing about the extra weight you’re carrying or the lack of time you have to do a quality workout, take a little pressure off yourself and add some fun to your workouts. Replace the word “should” or “obligation” with the word “choice” and create a new pattern of positive thinking. If workouts are all work and no play, the dedication to doing them has the potential to quickly dissipate.

Competition
Healthy competition between fellow athletes can make you stronger and more competent. It forces you to push yourself beyond your normal stopping point and do things that you may not do were you running/swimming/biking alone. Engaging in friendly rivalries puts you in charge of your performance while fostering a sense of community at the same time.

Taking Charge
Many fitness enthusiasts I spoke with mentioned the idea that training for an event allows them to “take charge” of their life in a new way – and can be very empowering. “While training for my first 10K race, I learned everything I could about nutrition and how it relates to endurance and performance.” said Julie, a Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon runner. “This knowledge not only helped me become leaner and faster, it gave me the confidence to make my own decisions instead of relying on others.”

Camaraderie
Having a friend, or group of people, to meet for a workout can make a huge difference in accountability, as well as results. “The fact that I know Katie will be waiting to meet me every morning for our 6:00 a.m. run is a huge motivating factor for me to shut off the alarm and get out of bed!” says Jen, a long-time marathon runner. What’s more, the social interaction can help boost confidence and performance.

In Honor of Another
People run, race and climb mountains in support of specific causes such as breast cancer or in honor of an individual. When I was volunteering in the swim transition area of Ironman Coeur’dalene, a necklace of the swimmer I was helping fell off as he pulled his goggles over his head. I reached down to pick up the necklace, a silver chain with a beautiful angel dangling at the end, and asked if he wanted to wear it for the rest of the race. “Oh yes,” he replied with tears welling up in his eyes, “This one is for my Mom.”

As a runner myself and Ironman hopeful, I’ve come to realize that the story behind every person’s eyes often remains hidden when it comes to what drives them. Yet, from grueling Ironman events to half marathons to marathons, one thing seems to remain true: the joy, sweat and tears lie within the heart of the journey itself. Outcome unknown, there’s an undeniable pride in one word: TRYING.

So… to inspire a vacation to someplace warm and sunny, I’ve started to pack my eco-friendly travel bag. Along with running shorts and bathing suits, I’ve packed lots of lightweight dresses and skirts. And of course, I’m including the wonderful Clarks Un.hoist walking sandal.

Ever since I was little, I’ve hoped to wake up to snow in Seattle on Christmas day. There is a whoppin’ 8% chance of snow on December 25th in the Pacific Northwest, so maybe Santa will deliver the fluffy stuff this year. Fingers crossed. Snowboots waiting.

This year, as part of the Chuckit Running Group, I got to run the Seattle half marathon as a pacer.

Start time was 7:30 a.m. so it was pretty chilly, but no rain. Yeah! When I laid out my clothes the night before, I didn’t think it was cold enough for full-length tights, so I chose the Saucony Ignite Tight Capri Turned out to be an excellent choice. As I’m slowly making the transition to running at night in the cold and dark, I’ve discovered yet another wonderful top to accompany me on the journey: the Saucony Drylete Sportop 09.

Darkness has set in over the Pacific Northwest. Along with the beautiful fall leaves and cool, crisp air arrives chilly temperatures, (more) rain, and a very limited amount of daylight. It’s time to take my workouts inside.

I ran the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 4th. My sister Mary Louise lives there with her family so I combined the race with a visit.

This is the first marathon I’ve run that had a beer tent at the finish—with free beer! As I’ve been told (and reminded) any event in the Midwest is just not complete without a beer tent, so there you go. Needless to say, I opted for chocolate soy milk instead of flat, watery beer (yum!) but my brother-in-law and nieces (of legal age, of course) chose otherwise.

I ran most of the course with the 3:40 pace group; my final time was 3:39. The weather was great. Not too cold for shorts, yet cold enough for gloves. Wearing the technical shirt included with the entry fee, the Brooks Epiphany Stretch shorts that I’d done a lot of training in, and adidas Supernova™ Glide shoes, I felt comfortable for nearly the entire 26.2 miles.

Running is by no means an easy physical endeavor – you need a will to endure poor weather, sore legs, burning lungs and short shorts. Running takes energy, discipline, and above all, dedication.

After all that, it is doubly hard if you can’t find a good pair of running shoes that fit. Choosing running shoes involves patience and perseverance, and it starts with finding the right fit.

Getting the right “fit” is a two step process and an important part of how to find the best running shoes for you.

1.  Running shoes need to provide the correct amount of support and cushioning to fit your body type and biomechanics.

Before you get too overwhelmed with words like biomechanics, over pronate and orthotics, pause and relax. I’ll make this easy for you.

It is super important to be fitted into the correct category of shoe for running; this will help alleviate any existing injuries and will help you avoid developing new ones.

2.  Running shoes need to be sized appropriately to fit your foot comfortably.

Here are some easy ways to determine whether or not your newest running shoes are fit for you:

• Try on shoes late in the day. Your feet will swell as the day goes on and this best simulates your foot shape and size during athletic activities.

• Try new shoes on with any inserts or orthotics that you use, as well as the normal socks that you run in. These are all important factors in getting an accurate and correct fit. Running shoes with orthotics are common and make a comfortable addition for many runners.

• Shoes should be as wide as your feet and longer in length. Allow for nearly a thumb’s width distance from the end of your longest toe to the end of the shoe.

• Choose shoes based on athletic activity. Don’t buy shoes designed for other sports (basketball, tennis, walking, bowling, etc) to use for running.

• Your foot shouldn’t hang over the midsole. If it does, try a wider shoe width. There’s a reason shoes come in multiple widths, because feet do.

• Make sure you’re standing when checking for size, width and feel (your feet get bigger when bearing the weight of your body).

Getting the right fit makes it easier to get out the door running. After that, the rest is all up to you.

Less than a week to go until I run the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The two- to three-week time period before the marathon is called tapering. Basically, it means exercising less as you reduce mileage and increase carbohydrates as you build your glycogen storage. The combination of more food and less running translates to one big challenge – both mentally and physically.

As my training is winding down , I’ve enjoyed lounging around in the comfort of the Brooks Motion Stretch Pant.

My dog, Willy is my favorite walking buddy. We’ve walked the dog parks of Seattle, explored mountain trails, and sniffed every nook and cranny of the neighborhood. I’m in the midst of training for an October marathon. It’s the Lakefront marathon to be exact – on October 4th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My oldest sister Mary Louise lives there with her family so I’m combining a trip to see her along with this race. I went to Milwaukee a few years ago in October and it was stunningly beautiful. Lots of fall color, crisp sunny weather and room to run. All the neighborhoods are filled with big old beautiful houses and best of all, they still have sidewalks! I grew up in a neighborhood of sidewalks and now, with all the condo building and construction in Seattle, sidewalks have become a thing of the past. Such a simple thing that makes a neighborhood actually seem like a neighborhood. Anyway…. I love that about Milwaukee.

On a beautiful summer evening in Seattle, I headed to the zoo to meet some friends for an outdoor concert. It couldn’t have been a more perfect night to sit outside with a blanket, a feast of treats, and music on the lawn.

I was wearing a dress, my friend Marni was in cute capris and a top. Dave and Marty were sportin’ the typical guy gear—shorts and T-shirts. Very different casual clothing for each one of us, but all feet shared something in common: KEEN Newport sandals.

Just last weekend, I went for a morning run in the capri pants and tank top. That afternoon, I traded the capris for a pair of bike shorts, kept the tank top and rode for 40 miles.
