Resolve to Get Outdoors: Week #5

Last week was a challenge achieving the goals I set for myself.  I was traveling for work and any routine I had hoped for was out the window.

I went to the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City. It’s a tradeshow that previews everything you’d need for outdoor adventure. Being the Winter Market, it was full of manufacturers showing their Fall 2010 product lines. It’s pretty exciting stuff and I came home more committed than ever to fill 2010 with all sorts of outdoor adventures.

Unfortunately my progress this week was less than stellar…and I’m going to need your help (does a FREE pair of shoes sound enticing?)

Resolve to Get Outdoors: Week #4

I need to remind myself frequently that it’s taken me years to get in this shape, and I’m not going to fix it in a few weeks. All things considered, it was another successful week working towards my goals. I bought a new scale, one that measures body fat, too. I lost three pounds last week and lowered the BF % several points. Not bad considering I have nine more months to lose the rest of it.

Eat Healthy

As Tremer suggested in the comments of my last post, I’ve been using the Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner for over a year. I think it was actually the first app I downloaded.

What I like most is I can pick a recipe and have all the ingredients at my fingertips if I’m at the store. The other thing I like is how the comments give you really cool variations on the original recipe. Read More

Resolve to Get Outdoors: Week #3

Resolve to Get Outdoors with Ron week #3

Here it is: The first official week of the New Year and I’ve got some pretty ambitious goals. I’m looking at this more like a marathon than a sprint and I’m still doing my warm ups.

I’ve broken my resolutions down into three basic categories so that I can begin to build a baseline that’ll support all of my goals. I’m really starting from the beginning, AGAIN! This real first week was actually much better than I expected as I’ve made progress in all three areas…

Eat Healthier

I’m weak when it comes to self control over food. It hasn’t been until the last few years that I haven’t been able to eat too much of just about everything. I love to cook almost as much as I love to eat. I joke with my friend Dave that I’m committed to a “Life of Lard” as I’ve convinced myself that you need to slather everything in butter to make it taste good. I’m learning this isn’t the case.

Resolve to Get Outdoors: Week #2

So it’s only a few days before the New Year and if I’m going to give any of my goals a real shot, I’m going to need a plan. I know how most of these resolutions go and just because I declared it to the world doesn’t mean it’ll happen.

For the record these are my goals:

  • I’ll get down to my ideal weight by my 50th Birthday in September.
  • I’d like to find a new trail to hike every other weekend and never do the same one twice.
  • I’d like to change my lifestyle (diet and exercise) so I can stay active and healthy for many more years.

I’ve done enough reading and I know myself well enough to know that I won’t succeed if I expect to change my behaviors on a large scale or in a short amount of time. I’m going to need to start slow and create small goals that lead me to my big goals. But before I begin anything, I’ve scheduled an appointment with my doctor for a full physical as it’s been a while. I feel pretty good but I want to give myself every chance at success.

I’ve always loved the outdoors; growing up in Seattle it’s pretty hard not to love it. As a kid I was lucky enough to be surrounded by adults who planned outdoor events almost every weekend. I remember exploring many trails in the Cascade Mountains as a tag-along with a neighbor’s family, eating homemade GORP and drinking from every little creek we crossed (I know better now).

In high school a buddy and I would grab a backpack and our fishing rods and hike up to remote high mountain lakes to catch some of the most beautiful rainbow trout you’ve ever seen. We would find a lake on the ranger station maps they’d provide and find our way up, trail or not (I know better on that too).
