Walking with Dogs

Just for clear disclosure…I want you all to know that I am not counting my daily walks with the dogs. Our dogs, Ruthie and Beatrice, move at such a glacial pace that there is really very little athletic value whatsoever. They are pugs in every sense of the word. If they had it their way, they would never move more than a brief walk from the sofa to the food bowl and back again. They were bred about 2,000 years ago to sit on the laps of emperors…so sitting down and generating heat is their core purpose in life. Clearly they’re not the type of dog that gets their master in shape.  But we do love them for their personality.

Resolve to Walk: Week #4

Hi Gang!

My update is that I had a middling week. I walked once during the week BUT I ran once and walked this weekend. So I am still close but no cigar (does anyone really reward people with cigars these days?). Anyway, I am walking TODAY! Yes, Monday, the busiest of all days. I am getting out. It is a beautiful day and I am ready to go. If you see a blur of black and brown going by at roughly the size of a 6-foot-tall human being in downtown Seattle…that’s me.

Some of our readers have commented that they really appreciate walking (running, hiking, etc.) with a buddy. They lean on their buddy for some fun chatter during the walk and for encouragement to get out in the first place. So we thought we would celebrate the walking buddies in this blog by offering a fun and easy contest! Read More

Resolve to Walk: Week #3

So, here’s my mid week update! You can probably tell by the fact that this blog is late that I don’t have stellar news. The good news is that I have been running on the weekends with my daughter in the running stroller, etc. And I have gotten out for a couple of walks. The bad news is that the literal meaning of “couple” is two. So I have not been reaching my goal of walking three times a week.

May I moan? The dark Seattle weather can be somewhat of a challenge to motivation and it’s been raining a ton here. But today I got out in my The North Face Denali jacket with rain protection and headed out—wind in face but feet dry in my walking shoes. I was happy to get out to the fresh air for a bit. I was able to pick up a healthy lunch on the walk as well and bring it back in time.

The real trick to keeping on this resolution will be Read More

Resolve to Walk: Week #2

Hi there, fellow walkers. I made a resolution to walk three times a week during the work week (mostly during lunch hours). I managed to walk twice last week before being engulfed by the holidays and even held a meeting while walking through Seattle that was not only an excellent use of time, but just as productive as a meeting sitting on one’s hindquarters. Why not turn your meetings into a “walking summit”?

But while I’ve been getting out, there have been a few bumps in the road. I recently had a meeting in downtown Seattle just south of Pike Place Market and found that I needed to get back in a hurry but wasn’t wearing the right shoes. Believe it or not, Mr. Shoeman ran out of the office wearing totally wrong shoes. They were great casual shoes that would work in a pinch for a short walk, but they were totally against purpose for a long, fast walk. What I do is more like Urban Hiking. At points, I was actually running in order to get back to another session in the office and before I really realized it, I had done some nasty damage to my left foot. It felt like I had bruised my heel and throbbed like I had taken a hammer to my instep.

So it’s the time of year when we all look at the big opportunity areas in our life. I noticed that amidst all of the busyness of business, children, home, community and friends that I had left some personal business undone. That would be my personal fitness… Yes, my metabolism did a belly flop in my late twenties and now I am sneaking up on 40 and just looking at a candy bar takes my waist size up.

How can I work in more than the weekend warrior runs down to the Kirkland park with my daughter, Caroline, in the jogging stroller? It’s great to get out twice a week but otherwise I have been pretty immobile. I take a car from home to work and back again. Then I have dinner, hold and feed the twins (yes, I have 2 week-old twins, Henry and Emma). Then I walk the dogs but they don’t walk far and grumble the whole way (yes, I am the proud owner of two pugs, Ruthie and Beatrice). I change the twins’ diapers and feed them again. And then change their diapers. And then I fall into bed and awaken for a new day.
