Will I ever stop torturing myself?!

Molly Malaney-Mesnick Training for the Chicago Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon

Well folks, it has been a while since I’ve graced you with my fitness woes. But alas…I’m back! It seems that as soon as one “challenge” in life ends…another begins. Today is no different!

Jason and I have been asked to participate in the Chicago Rock n Roll ½ Marathon. Neither of us are great runners, but we thought, “Hey, why not give it a shot and just try to finish.” So we agreed. What we failed to consider is…the marathon is in 3 WEEKS!

Honeymoon Must-Haves: Poolside Loungin’

Molly Malaney in Women's Steve Madden Sandals

Jason and I are the type of people who can’t sit still for very long. We constantly need to be doing something, which is why we had a jam-packed itinerary for our trip to South Africa. We did, however, manage to cut out two days for rest and relaxation. R&R, in my eyes, means lounging poolside, catching some rays, snacking on chips and salsa, and drinking a piña colada…all at the same time….so that was the plan.

I always find it strange when I see someone wearing high heels with their bathing suit. That seems a bit more appropriate for a swimsuit catalog than it does for real life. I do, however, like the idea of “dressing up” your bathing suit in a subtle way. It could be anything from a long necklace, some big earrings or some metallic sandals.

Honeymoon Must-Haves: Romantic Evening

Women's Steve Madden Loyyall high heels

Adventure aside, this is my honeymoon we are talking about. So, a romantic evening out with my new husband was a must! After toning it down in comfy flats, shorts and T-shirts all week, I wanted to get a little dressed up to set the mood for the evening. Jason and I didn’t have many of these “formal” evenings planned for the trip, so if there was one shoe that might have pushed the “necessity” limit…this was the one.

Honeymoon Must-Haves: City Exploration

Molly Malaney and Jason Mesnic Honeymoon Must-Haves

For me, the best part of travelling is exploring a new city. I like to learn about the culture, the food and the different ways people communicate in each place I visit. For our trip, we explored all of Cape Town, which sits on the beautiful coast of South Africa.

Whether in South Africa, Mexico or wherever you may be, what are two components of sightseeing? Walking and pictures! What goes hand in hand with walking and pictures, in relation to shoes? Comfort and style (boy, these were a common theme throughout this trip!).

Sightseeing is a great activity, but it can certainly make for a long day. This is why you must wear comfortable shoes. Trust me, I have tried the “I want to look cute, so I don’t care if my shoes are uncomfortable” thing. It was not pretty. I don’t believe, however, that you have to sacrifice style for comfort.

Honeymoon Must-Haves: What to Wear on a Safari

Molley Malaney's South African Safari Honeymoon

When you think of South Africa, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Safaris! This was one of the biggest reason’s Jason and I decided to go to South Africa. It has always been a dream of mine to go on an African safari and see nature at it’s finest.

When I was thinking of what to wear on our safari, I imagined khaki pants and a khaki shirt, with lots of pockets. A big bucket hat and a decorative scarf around my neck, but it’s 2010 and I didn’t want to waste my money on a “costume.” SO…I went for the more practical route. :)

Honeymoon Must-Haves: Packing for Travel

Women's Women's Kuno Diane Boots

After a hectic three months of working out and planning a wedding, it was time for some much needed rest and relaxation. Jason and I decided to head over to the beautiful country of South Africa for a two week honeymoon. Now…I love to travel, but I HATE lugging around a large and heavy suitcase. Since we were going to be gone for two weeks and travelling from place to place, my packing tactics needed to be very strategic, especially when it came to shoes.

Falling off the wagon

For the first time since I started this blog, I have fallen off the wagon.  Not in my training, but rather in my blog writing.

When life gets chaotic, it’s typical that priorities change and some pieces of life take a backseat.  I am in the midst of planning a wedding and traveling for work, so I definitely needed to re-evaluate my daily tasks in order to keep up with everything.  The easiest thing to take off my list would have been the most time consuming task: Exercising.  However, with my “to do” list getting longer by the minute, I needed exercise for the energy to get through it all.  It has become a necessity in my life.

Looking Back

As I have completed yet another successful week of my New Year’s resolution, it’s interesting to look back and realize how much progress I have made.

Four weeks ago, I was worried about completing a one mile run. Though I made it farther than I expected, it was still a struggle to get through it. I woke up each morning thinking, “How in the world am I ever going to stick with this? I am so tired, and all I want to do is lay around in my sweats and eat Doritos!” Today, I can comfortably say that the thought of a 4 mile run sounds tame. When I get home from work and want a snack, I grab carrots rather than a bag of chips. I feel so good throughout the day.

It’s amazing how quickly your body can get back into shape. Maybe it’s because I am still quite young, or maybe it has to do with Read More

Resolve to Run: Week #3

What’s your motivation? How about a free pair of shoes!

For me, doing the same old thing every day can become very monotonous and boring. I lose interest quickly, so I needed to switch things up this week. Rather than running 5 times, I broke it up with circuit training sessions every other day.

On Day 1, I was determined to hit that 3 mile marker, even if it took me 10 hours. Because of that, I was sure to schedule this run for Sunday, when I had some extra time. The run ended up being pretty smooth and enjoyable, and I think that is because I went into it with a great attitude. It’s unbelievable how your mood can directly affect how well your workout ends up.

On Day 2, I headed to Elite Fitness Training for a one-on-one circuit training session with a personal trainer. Since I am a beginner, I would have no idea what to do if you dropped me in a gym all by myself. This girl needed a professional’s guidance to make sure I got in a good workout. For 60 minutes straight, I was moving from exercise to exercise. We did anything from simple bicep curls to lunges while dribbling a basketball to boxing. The trainers at Elite do a great job of pushing your body to its max while keeping the workout exciting.

So Far So Good!

I can’t tell you how many times I have committed to a New Year’s Resolution to only fail a few days into it.  Well, not this time folks!  I am proud to say my first week on the wagon has been a success!  I’m not sure if this is due to the fact that my wedding is coming up, or if I feel the pressure from writing a public blog about my journey.  Either way, I have made more progress than any year before, so I am heading in the right direction!
