Until about a week ago, the only role ‘salsa’ ever played in my life was as a taco condiment. I had heard of the dance, yet never dreamed I would do it.

Since high school, I have been a wallflower. Insecure of my abnormal height and plagued by two left feet, I feared the dance floor and restricted myself to the sidelines, watching others whirl and twirl past, hoping that maybe someday, it would be me.

But last week, armed with my new Carpe Diem attitude, I attended my first dance class: Salsa 1 at the Century Ballroom. As explained in the description, it is perfect for the dancing impaired, aka me. No previous experience or coordination required!

Resolve to Get a Life: Week #4

Sieze every day to get out and have more fun with Amanda, Onlineshoes.com’s Rehabilitated Recluse.

Three weeks into “Operation Get a Life” and already I‘ve checked five items off my To Do list. Watch out world, ‘cause I’m on fire!

After learning the finer points of butt-kicking in martial arts, and then subsequently getting my butt kicked in flag football, I’ve taken up Hot Yoga, Zumba, and Step Aerobics.

I had tried one yoga class back in college and never returned. Nothing about it was natural. While everyone else was centered and relaxed, focusing on their chi, I was trembling like a leaf, grinding my jaw and praying to Buddha not to let me fall. In fact, the only thing even mildly enjoyable about it was hearing the funny names the instructor would call out. I wonder how yoga instructors can keep a serious face as they ask you to move into the ‘happy baby pose’ or ‘downward dog’. But I digress… Read More

While other little girls were watching Jem and fanaticizing about being the next member of the Holograms, I was watching football with my dad and dreaming of becoming the next Jerry Rice. But alas, that dream never became a reality. Other than just tossing the pigskin, and a couple unorganized turkey-bowl games, I never even played football.  So when I began my resolution of trying new things, the first thing I did was sign up for a co-ed flag football team.

Despite my love for the game, I was not familiar with flag football. I got the main concept: To stop a player who has the ball, you detach their flag. But beyond that, it was all ambiguous.

Resolve to Get a Life: Week #2

Get a Life with Amanda J

As the first activity in my pursuit of getting a life, I enrolled in a martial arts/self defense course. Upon signing up for the class, I was confident that it was the perfect way to start out my resolution. Not only would I be doing something I have always wanted to, I would also be learning useful skills and maybe even meeting people along the way.

However, as time went on, I couldn’t shake this overwhelming feeling of fear and self-doubt. When the first day of class finally arrived and I was packing up my gym bag, I felt my stomach turn to knots, my cheeks begin to flush, and anxiety settle in. Images of me kicking the air and falling on my backside in the front of a room full of chuckling black belts loomed in my brain. I began to question if it was even a good idea to attend or if I should just back out. And then as I was trying to decide if I should be packing or unpacking, I was reminded of the great words of Mr. Miyagi: “Okay, to lose to opponent. Not okay to lose to fear.” As his words of wisdom played over and over again, the doubt that had once weighed me down was obliterated by optimism. And so I finished packing, threw on my ASICS®, and bounded off to class. I swear I could hear “Eye of the Tiger” playing off in the distance.

Resolve to Get a Life: Week #1

Seize every day to get out and have more fun with Amanda, Onlineshoes.com’s Rehabilitated Recluse.

A couple of months ago I turned 25 and experienced what I have come to term, my “mid-mid life crisis.” For me, this day marked the first time that I really took a step back and assessed my life. I took a good, hard look at what I have done versus what I want to do, and I discovered a long list of things I have left to accomplish.
